From the Wire … Cubs Option Eduardo Sanchez to Iowa, Add Thomas Neal to Active Roster

August 6, 2013 12:32 pm By Neil 17 Comments

As expected, the Cubs added outfielder Thomas Neal to the 25-man roster on Tuesday. The Cubs claimed Neal off waivers from the Yankees on Monday and he will be available off the Cubs’ bench for the opener of the three-game series in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Eduardo Sanchez was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to make room for Thomas Neal on the active roster.

The Cubs added Eduardo Sanchez to the 40-man roster on July 26 and called him up from Triple-A Iowa. Sanchez made two appearances out of the Cubs pen while he was with the big league team. Sanchez allowed one run on three hits with no walks and one strikeout in three innings.

With the two roster moves, the Cubs have a five-player bench that includes Thomas Neal, Dioner Navarro, Cole Gillespie, Donnie Murphy and Logan Watkins. The seven-man bullpen now includes Kevin Gregg, Pedro Strop, Blake Parker, James Russell, Matt Guerrier, Hector Rondon and Michael Bowden.
