From the Wire … Cubs Call-Up Logan Watkins from Triple-A Iowa

August 4, 2013 10:06 am By Neil 25 Comments

According to multiple reports, the Cubs have called up infielder Logan Watkins from Triple-A Iowa to take Luis Valbuena’s spot on the active roster. Luis Valbuena will be placed on the 15-day DL with a right oblique strain.

Logan Watkins has spent the entire season in Iowa and hit .243/.333/.379/.711 with 18 doubles, seven triples and eight home runs.

The 23-year old (August 29, 1989) was the 21st round pick of the Cubs in the 2008 draft. Logan Watkins can play shortstop, second base and the outfield. Watkins has played one game at third base in his minor league career.

Logan Watkins was already on the 40-man roster so the Cubs did not have to make a corresponding 40-man roster move to call him up.

The Cubs should make two more roster moves before Tuesday’s opener in Philadelphia. The Cubs have been playing with a short bench due to carrying an extra reliever in the bullpen.
