From the Wire … Cubs DFA Shawn Camp, Option Rusin to Iowa and Activate Guerrier and Strop

July 3, 2013 5:27 pm By Neil 10 Comments

According to multiple reports, the Cubs designated Shawn Camp for assignment prior to Wednesday’s game. Camp re-signed with the Cubs in the off-season on a one-year, $1.35 million deal that included $200,000 incentives package.

Shawn Camp actually pitched worse than Carlos Marmol this season. Camp was 1-1 in 26 games with a 7.04 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP. In 23 innings, Camp surrendered 34 hits, walked nine batters, struck out 13 and committed two balks.

The Cubs have 10 days to trade Shawn Camp or release him.

The Cubs optioned Chris Rusin to Iowa after he filled in for Scott Feldman on Tuesday. The Cubs have not decided who will start Sunday’s finale against the Pirates. Rusin has to remain with the I-Cubs by rule for 10 days unless there is an injury. According to reports, Carlos Villanueva and Jake Arrieta are not options to start on Sunday.

The Cubs activated both Matt Guerrier and Pedro Strop as expected. Both relievers are in Oakland and will be available out of the Cubs’ bullpen for Wednesday night’s game.

With the four roster moves on Wednesday, the Cubs’ 40-man roster stands at 39 players.
