Cubs Sign Dominican RHP Jefferson Mejia

The International signing period began at 8:00am CDT on July 2 and according to Baseball America, the Cubs signed Dominican right hander, Jefferson Mejia for $850,000.

The Cubs have been seen as the favorite to sign Mejia in recent days and he will take a big chunk of the team’s $4.56 million signing bonus pool.

Jefferson Mejia is 18 years old and listed at 6-foot-7, 220 pounds. The big right hander from the Dominican Republic throws his fastball in the 90-93 mph range, a swing-and-miss changeup, along with a curveball in the mid-70’s.

The Cubs are seen as favorites to sign OF Eloy Jimenez. Jimenez is considered the top international prospect of this year’s class. Reports on Tuesday morning indicated it could be the end of the week before Jimenez announces his signing.
