Ryan Sweeney Out at Least 4-6 Weeks with Broken Rib

June 30, 2013 12:49 pm By Neil 7 Comments

The Cubs lost another outfielder on Saturday night. Ryan Sweeney will be placed on the 15-day DL on Tuesday after a CT scan late Saturday revealed a fracture in Sweeney’s rib. Sweeney hit the wall pretty hard in the third inning of Saturday night’s game to take away a hit from Kendrys Morales. Sweeney left the game in the fourth with what was thought bruised ribs at the time.

Ryan Sweeney will not be able to participate in baseball activities for four to six weeks.

The Cubs will make a roster move prior to Tuesday’s game in Oakland. Expect for Dave Sappelt to be added to the active roster until David DeJesus is able to return from the DL. The injury to Sweeney should give Julio Borbon additional playing time.

Ryan Sweeney said he is disappointed with what he called a “freak injury” because he did not hit the wall out of control. Sweeney added that the wall felt much harder than he remembered.

Sweeney was hitting .295/.342/.527 in 44 games with 10 doubles, two triples, four home runs and a .868 OPS.
