From the Wire … Cubs Claim Julio Borbon Off Waivers from the Rangers, DFA’d Alberto Gonzalez

April 19, 2013 12:55 pm By Neil 44 Comments

According to multiple reports, the Cubs claimed OF Julio Borbon off of waivers from the Rangers on Friday. Texas designated the former first round pick (2007) for assignment on April 9.

The Cubs will have to open a roster spot before they can officially add Julio Borbon. The Cubs 40-man roster currently stands at 40 players.

Updated 1:22pm CDT – Cubs DFA’d Alberto Gonzalez to make room on the 40-man roster for Julio Borbon.

Julio Borbon spent last season at the Triple-A level. Borbon posted a .304/.349/.433/.783 line in 126 games with 23 doubles, eight triples and 10 home runs. Borbon managed a .270/.305/.348/.654 line in 32 games for the Rangers in 2011.

Borbon has not been able to play to expectations and both Craig Gentry and Leonys Martin passed him on the Rangers’ depth chart. Borbon turned 27 in February (February 20, 1986).

Stay Tuned, this is the first of what could be a couple of roster moves for the Cubs this afternoon.
