Edwin Jackson (1-2, 2.40/1.00) vs. Joe Blanton (0-0, 3.86/0.86)
Countdown to Opening Day in Pittsburgh: 9 Days
The Cubs will spend their last Saturday in Arizona this spring hosting an Angels split squad at HoHoKam Park. There is only one week of practice games left, the Cubs wrap-up the pre-season next Saturday in Houston.
The Cubs face the Angels for the third and final time in the spring today. Dale Sveum’s team opened the Cactus League schedule exactly one month ago today in Tempe and pounded an Angels’ split squad 11-2. The Cubs then topped the Angels in Tempe on March 3 in a game started by Joe Blanton. The Cubs have four games on the schedule against Albert Pujols and company this season … two in Anaheim in June (June 4 and June 5) and two at Wrigley (July 9 and July 10).
Today’s game will be carried on both WGN-TV and 720 WGN with Len and JD on the TV side and Pat and Keith on the radio.
This afternoon it all starts with Edwin Jackson …
Edwin Jackson is coming off his best start of the spring and his first victory in a Cubs’ uniform. Jackson worked quickly as he dominated the Padres last Monday. Jackson limited the Padres to one run on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts in six innings. Jackson threw 76 pitches, 49 for strikes, and recorded nine groundball outs.
Jackson has shown improvement each time out, and will have just one more start in the pre-season before making his actual Cubs’ debut on April 3 in Pittsburgh.
This afternoon is Jackson’s fifth start in the Cactus League. Edwin Jackson has allowed four runs on 10 hits with five walks and six strikeouts over the first four (15 innings). Jackson reached the sixth in his last start, and should not exceed that today. If Jackson is as efficient this afternoon as he was against the Padres, look for Jackson to finish his day in the bullpen increasing his pitch count.
The Cubs faced Joe Blanton back on March 3 in Tempe. Blanton allowed one run on a couple of hits to the Cubs in his two innings of work, his only blemish was a long solo homer off the bat of Brian Bogusevic.
Blanton makes just his third Cactus League start this afternoon. Blanton has allowed three runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts over seven innings of work.
