Cubs Inform Alberto Gonzalez and Zach Putnam No Longer in Mix for Opening Day Roster

March 26, 2013 6:16 pm By Neil 3 Comments

While the spring roster cuts are not official, according to multiple reports the Cubs told Alberto Gonzalez and Zach Putnam they are no longer in the mix for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Both players are expected to be re-assigned to minor league camp in the coming days.

The Cubs’ Spring Training roster unofficially stands at 32 players with Matt Garza, Ian Stewart, Scott Baker and Arodys Vizcaino starting the year on the DL. Brett Jackson and J.C. Boscan remain in camp but both players are ticketed for Triple-A Iowa.

Steve Clevenger will break camp with the team unless a player becomes available that fits their needs a little better. The last spot in the Cubs’ pen is down to Hisanori Takahashi, Cory Wade or a waiver claim.
