Cubs Announce First Round of Spring Roster Cuts

March 8, 2013 2:27 pm By Neil 11 Comments

The Cubs announced the first round of roster cuts on Friday. The Cubs officially removed three players from the roster and reduced their Spring Training roster to 59 players.

Matt Szczur was optioned to Double-A Tennessee while catcher Michael Brenly and RHP Dayan Diaz was reassigned to minor league camp. Brenly and Diaz were in big league camp on non-roster invitations. Szczur remains on the Cubs’ 40-man roster, but the move will count as one of his option years.

The Cubs officially had 62 players in camp prior to Friday’s cuts. The three cuts came as no surprise, and officially reduced the spring roster to 59 players.

The Cubs are expected to make another round of roster cuts in the middle of next week. Dale Sveum indicated a few days ago that the second round of cuts would be larger than Friday’s roster reduction.
