From the Wire … Cubs and Braves Agree in Principal on a Deal for Ryan Dempster

July 23, 2012 1:28 pm By Neil 65 Comments

According to multiple reports, the Cubs have traded Ryan Dempster to the Atlanta Braves. The Braves and Nationals were considered the front runners for Dempster after the Dodgers appeared to back out of the running prior to his start on Friday night in St. Louis. Frank Wren and Fredi Gonzalez feel they have a good shot at re-signing Dempster because of their history with Dempster dating back to the time they spent with him in the Marlins organization.

Updated 1:51pm CDT – Reports are confirming that RHP Randall Delgado is part of the Cubs’ return for Ryan Dempster.

Updated 2:14pm CDT – According to reports from the Sun-Times and David Kaplan, the deal between the Cubs and Braves for Ryan Dempster is not done. The two sides are continuing to talk but nothing is done or imminent.

Updated 2:32pm CDT – According to Ryan Dempster, he has not been traded to the Atlanta Braves. Ryan Dempster made the announcement on his foundation’s twitter account. Dempster is not sure where the information is coming from.

Updated 2:55pm CDT – Ryan Dempster is in the Cubs’ clubhouse in Pittsburgh. Dempster told the media he would not discuss the reports/rumor that he has been traded to the Braves. Dempster responded with, ” If it’s on the internet it must be true.” David Kaplan spoke with Randall Delgado’s agent. Kaplan was told, “We haven’t heard a thing about him being traded.” No word yet on the player or players the Cubs will receive in the deal or the financial terms.

Will Update …
