From the Wire … Cubs Designate Blake DeWitt for Assignment

May 6, 2012 10:17 am By Neil 10 Comments

According to multiple reports, the Cubs have designated Blake DeWitt for assignment to make room for Travis Wood on the active roster.

Blake DeWitt has struggled this season to the tune of a .138/.133/.172/.306 line in 18 games, 29 at bats. This move comes as no surprise and likely creates a spot on the big league team for Adrian Cardenas in the near future. With Blake DeWitt being DFA’d, the Cubs 40-man roster now stands at 38 players. The Cubs have 10 days to trade him or grant him his outright release. The Cubs are hoping he clears waivers and chooses to accept the assignment to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs feel he could use regular playing time.

Blake DeWitt avoided arbitration in the off-season by signing a $1.1 million contract.
