According to multiple reports, the Cubs reduced their spring roster by four players Wednesday morning. Justin Berg and Scott Maine were optioned to Triple-A Iowa … and Todd Wellemeyer and Angel Guzman were assigned to minor league camp.
The Cubs spring roster officially stands at 36 players with more cuts expected by Thursday or Friday. With the Cubs optioning Scott Maine to Triple-A, it appears James Russell will begin the year as the Cubs third lefty in the pen … joining Sean Marshall and John Grabow.
In other news … Max Ramirez went for an MRI on his left wrist. Ramirez is battling for a backup job with Koyie Hill and Welington Castillo. Ramirez is out of minor league options and if he does not make the team out of camp, he would have to clear waivers before being assigned to minor league camp.
