Rumors, Rumors and More Rumors for the Cubs at Day Two of the Winter Meetings

December 7, 2010 6:51 pm By Neil Leave a Comment

The Cubs might not be making any moves, as of yet, but Jim Hendry is doing a lot of talking. Tuesday was a busy day for the Cubs that reportedly will end with a second meeting in 24 hours with Carlos Pena’s agent, Scott Boras.

According to the rumor mill, Hendry aggressively shopped Tom Gorzelanny, intensified his talks with Adam LaRoche, checked in with Brandon Webb and discussed trading Robinson Chirinos and a pitcher to the Rangers for Chris Davis and Darren O’Day on his second day in Orlando … Tom Gorzelanny
According to a tweet from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Cubs are in Orlando “aggressively shopping” left-hander Tom Gorzelanny. Kovacevic’s report on Tueday morning seem to quiet later in the day. Bruce Levine indicated the Cubs would have to receive pitching back in any deal that included Gorzelanny.

Gorzelanny is arbitration eligible and being a southpaw, he figures to have some value.

Adam LaRoche
The Cubs appeared to be closing in on a deal with Adam LaRoche on Tuesday but those rumors were soon silenced as well. The Cubs have interest but to what extent is unknown at this time.

A tweet from Comcast SportsNet indicated the Cubs were not close on a deal with Adam LaRoche.

Brandon Webb
The Cubs are interested in signing Brandon Webb and were scheduled to meet with his representatives on Tuesday afternoon.

Carlos Pena
Jim Hendry met with Scott Boras about Carlos Pena on Monday night … and the Cubs are scheduled to meet with him again Tuesday night.

Bruce Levine reported that Pena is the Cubs top free agent target. A report early Tuesday indicated the Cubs and Boras have not discussed money with the first baseman.

Chris Davis and Darren O’Day
According to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, the Cubs are working on a deal that would land them a first baseman and a relief pitcher. The Cubs and Rangers have been discussing Chris Davis for weeks but the addition of Darren O’Day to the mix is very intriguing.

The Rangers are very interested in Robinson Chirinos according to Bruce Levine. During his weekly chat, Levine mentioned a possible deal with the Rangers that would include a relief pitcher from both the Cubs and Rangers being exchanged in a Davis/Chirinos trade.

Stay Tuned … there will be a full update with all of the news and rumors from Orlando late Tuesday night.
