Tyler Colvin and the Cubs Opening Day Roster

March 28, 2010 8:10 pm By Neil Leave a Comment

The Cubs have not officially made the announcement but Lou Piniella said on Sunday that Tyler Colvin has made the Cubs’ Opening Day roster.

With Colvin and James Russell in the fold, that leaves one spot on the Opening Day roster.

The Cubs still have 31 players on their Spring Training roster. Angel Guzman will be placed on the DL this week, along with Ted Lilly. Chris Robinson has been told he will not make the team. That technically leaves Sam Fuld, Micah Hoffpauir, Chad Tracy and Kevin Millar vying for the final spot … but the competition is actually between Millar and Tracy. Sam Fuld and Micah Hoffpauir each have a minor league options left. So if the Cubs need Fuld or Hoffpauir, they would be a call away.

Kevin Millar has done everything Jim Hendry wanted him to do this spring, but Chad Tracy fits the Cubs’ needs more than Millar.

The final decision is expected Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Cubs 40-man roster currently stands at 37 players. They will have to purchase James Russell’s contract and add him to the big league roster … same for Millar or Tracy. For more details, including options and contracts, reference the CCO’s 40-man roster.
