It is the Cubs last split-squad day of the spring. Carlos Zambrano and company will stay at home and face the Angels while a roster full of call-ups from minor league camp will travel to Maryvale.

Carlos Zambrano is expected to throw no more than three or four innings this afternoon in his last outing before Opening Day.

Xavier Nady is expected to play in the outfield on Wednesday. One report indicated Nady would play in a minor league game at Fitch Park while another one said Nady would suit up for the game against the Angels.

In other news … Ted Lilly pitched three scoreless innings in a minor league game on Tuesday. Lilly threw 45 pitches and will make his final start in Arizona on Sunday. Lilly will begin his rehab stint, likely with the Daytona Cubs, next week. Cubs vs. Angels at HoHoKam Park

Wednesday’s game at HoHoKam will feature a battle of Opening Day starters … Carlos Zambrano and Jered Weaver. Both will “just get their work in” this afternoon and should not go longer than four innings.

Carlos Zambrano will make his sixth start of the spring. Zambrano has quietly gone about his business during camp. Big Z has allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 17 hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts in 20 innings … Zambrano has also hit a couple of batters.

Jered Weaver has struggled a little this spring. In 12 1/3 innings, the Angels’ number one starter has allowed 12 runs, 11 earned, on 18 hits with six walks and 10 strikeouts … Weaver has hit a pair of batters as well.

This afternoon will be Weaver’s fifth start in the Cactus League.

Cubs vs. Brewers at Maryvale Baseball Park

The next time the Cubs face the Brewers will be at the Cubs’ home opener on April 12 … Both games played this spring by the division rivals have been won by the Brewers.

Alan Trammell figures to be the Cubs’ acting manager in Maryvale and his starting lineup will feature mostly call-ups from minor league camp.

Yovani Gallardo, the Brewers’ starter for Opening Day, will make his sixth start of the spring this afternoon. Gallardo has allowed 10 runs on 16 hits with seven walks and 16 strikeouts in 17 innings.
