Piniella Impressed by Cubs Prospects

February 23, 2010 12:45 am By Neil Leave a Comment

A day before the first full squad workout, a few of the Cubs’ top prospects, as well as a couple of the non-roster invitees impressed Lou Piniella.

Piniella told the Daily Herald that “some of the young kids can swing the bat” referring to Brett Jackson and Josh Vitters. Piniella also commented about the size of the players in Mesa this spring. “Last year’s camp, we had a lot of smaller players, but these kids have some size to them.” Lou Piniella also mentioned how good Tyler Colvin looked swinging the bat. Colvin spent the off-season working out with Tim Buss … and added 25 pounds with the Cubs’ Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. Piniella noticed Colvin’s improved bat speed.

As for the non-roster invitees, Bryan LaHair and Chad Tracy were two of the players that caught the skipper’s attention.

While a majority of the spots on the active roster may already be filled, the Cubs have done a better job this winter of adding quality depth.

There should be some good competition for the final spots on the roster.

Stay Tuned …
