From the Wire … Harden and Gregg Not Offered Arbitration

December 1, 2009 2:49 pm By Neil Leave a Comment

According to a report from Cubs.com, Rich Harden and Kevin Gregg were not offered salary arbitration by the Cubs on Tuesday. Harden, a Type-B free agent, was claimed off waivers last season by the Twins but the Cubs pulled him back and did not deal him for prospects before the deadline.

Both players were not expected to receive salary arbitration offers from the Cubs. The Cubs can still re-sign Rich Harden and Kevin Gregg but are expected to let both players sign elsewhere. The Cubs other free-agent, Reed Johnson, could return for 2010 … both sides have expressed interest in Johnson returning to the Cubs.

By not offering salary arbitration to Rich Harden, the Cubs lost a compensatory pick in the 2010 draft (sandwich pick in between the first and second rounds) once Harden signs with another club.
