Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 05/04/09

Here is your end of the week update from the Cubs’ Minor League System. Weather wrecked havoc on the teams’ schedules throughout the weekend, with the Smokies getting their last three games rained out. Iowa’s game on Saturday was also rained out and their game against the Redbirds in Memphis on Sunday was suspended in the fourth inning with the Cubs up 2-0.

Peoria Chiefs – Class A

Thursday 4/30 – Chiefs score early and often, hold on to win 10-6

  • Winning Pitcher: Aaron Shafer (3-1)
  • Offense: Tony Campana: 1-for-3, 2 R, 1 double, 1 BB, 1 SB; Josh Harrison: 2-for-3, 1 R, 2 RBI; Kyler Burke: 3-for-3, 2 R, 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 2 BB; Nelson Perez: 2-for-5, 1 R, 1 double, 1 HR, 3 RBI

Friday 5/1 – Chiefs drop a pitchers’ duel to the Burlington Bees-0-1

  • Losing Pitcher: Marcus Hatley (1-1)
  • Offense: Josh Vitters: 2-for-4, 1 double

Saturday 5/2 – Chiefs drop a slugfest to the Cedar Rapid Kernals, 7-9

  • Losing Pitcher: Kevin Kreier (2-1)
  • Offense: Junior Lake: 2-for-4, 2 R; Rebel Ridling: 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 R; Nelson Perez: 1-for-4, 1 HR (Grand Slam) 4 RBI; Ryan Flaherty: 1-for-2, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB

Sunday 5/3 – Chiefs drop a close one to the Kernals in extras 1-2

  • Losing Pitcher: Chris Huseby (0-2)
  • Offense: Josh Vitters: 2-for-5, 1 R

Daytona Cubs – Class High A

Thursday 4/30 – Cubs have a tough time scoring runs, lose to the Brevard County Manatees, 3-7

  • Losing Pitcher: James Leverton (1-2)
  • Offense: Mark Reed: 1-for-4, 1 run, 1 triple, 1 RBI

Friday 5/1 – Cubs drop a game to the Clearwater Threshers, 3-5, but Andrew Cashner has a good start!

  • Losing Pitcher: Stephen Vento (0-3)
  • Offense: Starlin Castro: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 SB

Saturday 5/2 – Daytona falls to the Clearwater Threshers, 3-4 in 13 innings

  • Losing Pitcher: Henry Williamson (1-1)
  • Offense: Jake Opitz: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 double, 1 RBI, 2 BB; Tony Campana (called up on to Daytona on Friday), 2-for-5, 1 R, 1 SB

Sunday 5/3 – Cubs erupt for 5 in the 9th to defeat the Threshers, 7-4

  • Winning Pitcher: Al Alburquerque (1-0)
  • Offense: Robinson Chirinos: 3-for-4, 2 R, 1 double, 1 HR, 3 RBI; Starlin Castro: 2-for-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI

Tennessee Smokies – Class AA

Thursday 4/30 – Smokies score just enough for the win, 7-6

  • Winning Pitcher: Alex Maestri (1-0)

Saturday 5/2 – Game Postponed due to rain
Sunday 5/3 – Game Suspended, will be finished on 5/31/09
