Marmol to Pitch in WBC

February 28, 2009 1:08 pm By Neil Leave a Comment

According to a report from the Sun-Times, Carlos Marmol will pitch in the upcoming World Baseball Classic after all. Marmol made the Cubs aware of his decision on Saturday morning after announcing last week he would not participate.

Marmol will leave Cubs’ camp on Tuesday to join the Dominican Republic team.
Carlos Marmol is expected to be the closer for Team Dominican Republic and according to the Sun-Times players on the team persuaded Marmol to participate.

The Cubs say his participation will not affect him competing for the Cubs’ closer job with Kevin Gregg. Marmol threw a bullpen session on Saturday and is expected to pitch in Monday’s game against the Diamondbacks before leaving for the tournament.

With Carlos Marmol now in the WBC, the Cubs’ have four players on the 40-man roster playing in the tournament….Ted Lilly, Geovany Soto, Kosuke Fukudome and Marmol.
