After much speculation, the Cubs optioned Rocky Cherry to Iowa and selected infielder Mike Fontenot from Iowa. Mark DeRosa is still on the active roster.

Updated – 11:07pm – Kerry Wood Moved to the 60-Day DL

According to a report from Paul Sullivan in the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs are expected to place Mark DeRosa on the DL and call-up Mike Fontenot from Triple-A Iowa. DeRosa was hurt in a collision in Monday night’s game at 1st base with Endy Chavez. The Cubs have not released the extent of the injury.

The Cubs would have to make another roster move to place Fontenot on the 40-man roster. Fontenot was hitting .364 with a .401 OBP with 6 home runs and 27 RBI’s in 35 games for Iowa. Fontenot was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in the Sammy Sosa trade in 2005 and received a cup of coffee with the Cubs in 2005; he played the entire season with Iowa in 2006.
