Talkin’ Cubs Live – Cubs vs. White Sox – 03/16/07

Spring Training Game Sixteen: Cubs (8-6-1) vs. White Sox (6-11)
Game Time – 3:05pm C.T. – WGN TV ( White Sox Telecast)
Location – Tucson Electric Park, Tucson

Angel Guzman (0-0, 2.84) vs. Javier Vazquez (0-2, 15.19)

While these games may be just exhibitions Angel Guzman has a lot to prove today if he wants to break camp with the big league club in the starting rotation. Guzman has had a good spring; he has thrown the ball well with decent results and good location. In 6 1/3 innings in relief he has allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, a 1.11 WHIP and most importantly he has not walked a single batter. Guzman is being mentioned as a candidate for the 5th spot in the rotation, along with Wade Miller. If the season started tomorrow Miller would have the edge, but there is a couple of starts left for each pitcher before heading to Cincinnati to start the season. Guzman did an adequate job last season in relief but to say he was horrible in the games he started would be an understatement….especially the one in Colorado. Guzman has been hitting the mid to upper 90’s on his fastball with good location and against a White Sox lineup that will likely feature all of their regulars, today could be a good test for him.

The Cubs will face Javier Vazquez who recently signed a 3-year, $34.5 million dollar contract and he has been horrible this spring. Ozzie Guillen has not been happy with his pitcher’s performance. In 2 games he has allowed 9 runs on 12 hits, struck out 3 and walked 2 in 5 1/3 innings with a 2.63 WHIP….and the amazing stat is, no home runs.

Granted this is a spring training game, but it is the Sox and the Cubs were embarrassed back on March 4th at HoHoKam….
