Game One Hundred Forty-Five: Cubs (57-87) vs. Dodgers (76-67)
Game Time – 7:05pm C.T. Comcast Sports Net, WGN Radio, XM Radio Channel 188
Location – Wrigley Field, Chicago
Sean Marshall (5-9, 5.27) vs. Derek Lowe (14-8, 3.64)
The last time the Cubs faced the Dodgers their season came to a grinding halt. Rafael Furcal ran into Derrek Lee, he broke his wrist and the Cubs’ season spiraled into oblivion. A lot has transpired since April 19th, Sean Marshall started that game as well, and after tonight there are only 17 games left in this nightmare of a season.
The Cubs have a chance to play the role of spoiler; their next 13 games are against the Dodgers, Reds and Phillies all of which have dreams of the post season. The Dodgers are just 1 1/2 games ahead of the Padres in the West; the Padres are leading the Wild Card, 2 ahead of the Marlins, 2 1/2 ahead of the Phillies and 3 1/2 ahead of the Reds. Sean Marshall took a step back his last time out against the Pirates. He was not as confident and looked very uncomfortable on the mound. Marshall slowed down his pace and did not challenge the Pirates the way he did earlier in the season. He gave up 5 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings of work. The most troublesome stat concerning Marshall is the amount of home runs he has allowed in his last 4 starts. In his last 19 innings he has given up 8 home runs after giving up just 9 in his previous 17 (93 2/3 innings). In his start against the Dodgers he held them to 2 runs on 2 hits in 5 innings (a home run by Jason Repko).
Derek Lowe has pitched very good for the Dodgers this season. He is coming off a terrific August and has held opponents to 3 runs or less in his last 8 starts. Lowe is 6-1 with a 1.79 ERA over that span. Lowe faced the Cubs on April 18th and received a no-decision. The Cubs put up just 1 run on 5 hits in 7 innings with Carlos Zambrano on the mound. The Cubs lost the game in the 9th; Will Ohman gave up a game winning single to J.D. Drew. Lowe is 1-1 in 3 career games against the Cubs with a complete game and a 2.91 ERA.
