Game Eighty-Four: Cubs (30-53) vs. Astros (42-42)
Game Time – 7:05pm C.T. Comcast Sports Net, WGN Radio, XM Radio Channel 187
Location – Minute Maid Park, Houston
Sean Marshall (4-7, 5.19) vs. Roy Oswalt (6-4, 3.27)
Sean Marshall takes the mound tonight for the Cubs, this will be the 17th start on the season for the rookie and the 31st game a rookie pitcher has started for the Cubs this season. Marshall has only won 4 games but if he would have had any run support he could easily be 10-6 at this point instead of 3 games under .500. Marshall has started twice against the Astros and he is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA and on June 7th he held the Astros to 1 run in 7 innings of work at Minute Maid Park. Marshall must throw strikes tonight….in the fist two games of the series Cubs pitching has allowed 15 walks and Marshall as of late has being walking as many as he has been striking out. In his last six starts Marshall is 1-4 with a 5.45 ERA and since he last won a game he is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA with 9 strikeouts and 6 walks.
Roy Oswalt beat the Cubs and Greg Maddux on June 14th, 5-4. Oswalt gave up 3 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings of work, it was his first game back from the DL. Since Oswalt is 0-1 in 3 starts with a 3.52 ERA and is coming off a complete game loss to the Rangers. Oswalt has been sharp this season but like Clemens he has received little run support.
The Cubs have to start stringing together hits and figure out a way to score runs not for any other reason than pride. The Cubs have five games left, including tonight, before the All-Star break and they need to win a few ball games and maybe top their season long winning streak of three. The Cubs are getting their “hat handed to them” on a daily basis and their play is embarrassing for the organization, the city and the Faithful.
