Talkin’ Cubs Live – Cubs vs. Cardinals – 04/22/06

Game Sixteen: Cubs (9-6) vs. Cardinals (10-6)
Game Time – 1:15pm C.T. on Comcast SportsNet, WGN Radio, XM Radio Channel 187
Location – Busch Stadium, St. Louis

Glendon Rusch (1-2, 6.60) vs. Sidney Ponson (1-0, 3.97

Glendon Rusch goes for the Cubs today against Sidney Ponson, who got a no decision his last time out against the Cubs on that wonderful Sunday night on April 9th. The Cubs offense got to Ponson and he allowed 3 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings, that night….what will the Cubs be able to do against Ponson today is the question. Glendon Rusch is the key to the game today. Rusch is coming off his best outing of the year last Sunday against the Pirates. Rusch allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings of work on Easter, but this is a different team and Rusch has to keep the ball in the park today. Rusch has allowed 16 hits, in just 15 innings of work and of those 16 hits, 7 have been home runs.

The Cubs were given an early hole on Friday night, one they could never dig out of and with the offense missing its biggest part the pitching staff cannot continue to allow 7 runs in 1 1/3 innings. The ‘new look’ or ‘small ball’ Cubs have to play smart and get quality starts from the staff in order to be successful over the next couple of months….and neither was the case on Friday.

Notes from the CCO – Let’s hope good ole ‘Glooroo’ has had plenty of rest over the past week and is ready for the game against the Cardinals. If ‘Glooroo’ is successful again today….well we will cross that bridge then….
