ESPN has released its 2006 Cubs preview and Peter Gammons mentioned the Cubs interest in Freddie Bynum (Bruce Levine mentioned him on Saturday), Marquis Grissom according to the Chicago Tribune is conteplating his future…. ESPN has released its 2006 Chicago Cubs preview. It is a very good read and here are the links. The most interesting is Peter Gammons take on the ‘kids in the organization’, unfortunately it is placed in the ‘in’ section of the website.
Marquis Grissom article from the Chicago Tribune and here is the part about Grissom:
Marquis Grissom played nine innings Monday for the first time this spring and said afterward he’s “evaluating myself” more than the Cubs are evaluating him. Grissom, a non-roster invitee, is hitting .200 and in danger of being one of the final roster cuts. “I told them if there’s any indication that I can’t do [my job], it’ll be that time [to leave],” Grissom said. “But I’m feeling pretty good right now. Take it one day at a time and try to make it to Thursday and see what happens.”
The Cubs must decide whether Grissom’s experience and leadership outweigh his mediocre spring. Grissom, 38, has to decide whether he’s still having fun and capable of playing an entire season without breaking down.
“I haven’t quit yet,” he said.
Does he feel good about his chances of making the cut?
“I hope so,” he said. “I’ve come a long way to stop now…. It’s been fun at times. When I stop having fun, it’s time to go.”
Marquis Grissom had a rough day on Monday against the White Sox. He is taking bad routes to balls and just not making the plays. Grissom has had a good career, but the Cubs might benefit from the youth and enthusiasm of Angel Pagan. Pagan is a good player, speed, strong arm….the tools the Cubs need off the bench.
Freddie Bynum’s stats from the Baseball Cube
Well that’s the news and I’m sticking to it!!!!
