The Hot Stove….Revisited

March 17, 2006 2:00 am By Neil Leave a Comment

This past off-season was one of the biggest and most scrutinized in the history of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs Faithful was up in arms over the World Championship going to the ‘Wrongside’ of Chicago.

There were many moves made and not made by the Cubs that fueled that Hot Stove fire. Many wanted (and expected) the Cubs to sign Rafael Furcal. Many wanted the Cubs to go after Kevin Millwood and Jeff Weaver. What about Nomar? Corey Patterson? ….and so on. So from time to time this season the CCO will take a look at the stats of ‘What Was or What Could Have Been’ and compare them with the additions the Cubs made…. What Is

Jacque Jones – .421 (8 for 19) in 9 games, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 3BB, .500 OBP, .579 SLG
Juan Pierre – .214 (6 for 28) in 10 games, 0 HR, 1 RBI, .241 OBP, .286 SLG
Ronny Cedeno – .167 (4 for 24) in 11 games, 0 HR, 2 RBI, .231 OBP, .167 SLG

Glendon Rusch – 1-1, 7.00 ERA, 3 games, 9 IP, 14 Hits, 4 SO, 2 HR
Jerome Williams – 0-3, 9.00 ERA, 3 games, 9 IP, 15 Hits, 1 SO, 0 HR

Renyel Pinto – 1-0, 3.60 ERA, 3 games, 5.0 IP, 5 Hits, 7 SO, 0 HR

What Could Have Been

Rafael Furcal – played 1st game of the spring on Wednesday, 0 for 1
Alfonso Soriano is in the WBC
Miguel Tejada is in the WBC

Kevin Millwood – pitched one game this past Monday, 4 innings against a Seattle lineup that was all Minor Leaguers, he gave up 1 run on 3 hits and threw 58 pitches. Millwood is scheduled to pitch tomorrow against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Jeff Weaver – 0-1, 15.43 ERA, 3 games, 9.1 IP, 21 hits, 1 SO, 4 HR
Barry Zito – 1-0, 4.00 ERA, 3 games, 9.0 IP, 10 hits, 8 SO, 1 HR
A.J. Burnett – 0-1, 7.71 ERA, 2 games, 7.0 IP, 7 hits, 10 SO, 1 HR
B.J. Ryan – 0-0, 3.60 ERA, 5 games, 5.0 IP, 4 hits, 6 SO, 0 HR

If there is a player you would like me to keep track of during the season, let me know. Hindsight is always better than foresight….at least that’s what I’ve been told, so it should be interesting to see how those decisions, made so long ago, transpire throught the season
