Game Nineteen: Cubs 10 Diamondbacks 2
Updated: 8:55pm C.S.T., Plus Questions from Mesa
Angel Guzman and Rich Hill were the story in Tucson on Monday. Guzman had a strong outing to begin the game, although he had a rough first inning, he settled down and showed why the Cubs are considering him for the 5th spot in the rotation. Guzman started the game going 3 innings and allowing only 2 runs on 1 hit….he walked 3. Rich Hill followed Guzman and pitched 3 scoreless innings, striking out 5 and walking 3. This was the best outing of the spring for Rich Hill and the pitching staff as a whole. John Koronka, Scott Eyre and David Aardsma also pitched on Monday and combined with Guzman and Hill to only give up 2 hits to the Diamondbacks.
The Cubs pounded out 16 hits against Orlando ‘El Duque’ Hernandez and former Cub Terry Mulholland. More from the game…. Matt Murton added another 2 for 3 day, Ronny Cedeno went 1 for 3 and Neifi Perez had his best day of the spring going 2 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI’s. Perez got the start at third. Jerry Hairston was in centerfield and Todd Walker was at second base. Hairston hit leadoff and went 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored. Rich Hill got into the mix on offense and added a hit to the Cubs total.
The biggest change on Monday was the pitching of Angel Guzman and Rich Hill. They both walked 3 batters, but they seemed to pitch their way out of trouble without allowing the Diamondbacks to do much damage. Pitchers are going to give up runs and get themselves into trouble, but it is how they react under pressure that separate 15 game winners from Minor League prospects.
Tuesday – The Milwaukee Brewers at HoHoKam at 2:05pm C.S.T.
Sean Marshall vs. Chris Capuano
Sean Marshall is scheduled to make his first start of the spring on Tuesday against the Brewers. Tuesday is the last time the Cubs will play the Brewers until the regular season starts….the first regular season match-up is April 28th in Chicago.
Questions from Mesa
The Cubs have 13 Spring Training games left on the schedule, including the Big League Weekend in Las Vegas. The Cubs should reduce their roster at some point this week….some of the first cuts should come from the catching corp. With that in mind, when will Dusty start shaping his everyday line-up? Will it be with 10 games left or when Derrek Lee returns sometime toward the end of the week? Some reports are saying D-Lee will return by Wednesday, but most are saying Thursday against the Mariners at HoHoKam. There was a report in the Chicago Sun-Times on Monday morning that mentioned that Dusty Baker has pretty much made up his mind on the second base situation. Mike Kelly brought up that most think it will be Jerry Hairston, if so why did he play in centerfield on Monday?
The last Spring Training game in Mesa is March 30th….nine full days away, how will this team look when they break camp? In Dusty….We Trusty….right?
