The Cubs Spring Training Report – Is There A New Marshall In Chicago?

March 21, 2006 4:28 pm By Neil Leave a Comment

Game Twenty: Cubs 4 Brewers 4
Updated: 9:25pm C.S.T., plus Roster Moves on Tuesday and Derrek Lee Could Return This Week

The game in Mesa was cut short due to rain on Tuesday after 6 innings. Sean Marshall had a good outing throwing 3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits, striking out 2 and hit a batter. Marshall threw 37 pitches, 27 for strikes. With Monday’s performances by Rich Hill and Angel Guzman, Sunday’s performance by Jae Kuk Ryu and Tuesday’s performance by Sean Marshall, the competition is heating up for the 5th spot in the rotation. Marshall has been consistent all spring and has yet to allow a run. Tuesday was Marshall’s 4th game of the spring and his first start.

Sean Marshall is listed as 6’7″ tall and the left-hander has good mechanics. It was very interesting to watch him in the bullpen in Mesa earlier in the month. Marshall has not pitched above AA, but all indications out of Chicago and Mesa is that he has moved to the front of the pitching prospects in the Cubs organization….ahead of Rich Hill and Angel Guzman. More from the game…. Bobby Howry allowed his first earned runs of the spring, allowing 2 on 4 hits in 2 innings of work. Howry gave up a walk and two doubles on Tuesday. Howry and Scott Eyre have both had exceptional springs and remember even the best give up runs. Les Walrond gave up the other 2 runs against the Brewers on Tuesday.

The lineup took shape on Tuesday. The projected Opening Day lineup was in there with the exception of Derrek Lee. Todd Walker played first and made some good defensive plays. Jerry Hairston hit in the 2 hole and played second base. Juan Pierre went 2 for 3 and scored 2 runs, he is starting to warm up. Aramis Ramirez went 2 for 2 and added 2 RBI’s. Matt Murton walked with 2 outs and was on when Ronny Cedeno hit his first home run of the spring. (Remember those little things) Cedeno is starting to hit the ball hard. The offense did well against Chris Capuano. Capuano allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings of work, do that during the regular season and the Cubs can put a ‘W’ on the board.

Wednesday – The San Diego Padres in Peoria, 8:05pm C.S.T. on XM Radio Channel 188

Greg Maddux vs. Woody Williams

The Cubs play their first night game of the year on Wednesday in Peoria. Greg Maddux will get his third start of the spring. Check back during the game for updates.

Roster Moves and News from Mesa on Tuesday

Dennis Anderson and Jake Fox were assigned to the Minor League camp on Tuesday. The Cubs still have 46 players in camp, look for more roster moves to come this week.

According to several reports out of Chicago, Derrek Lee could be in the lineup toward the end of this week. Some reports are stating as early as Wednesday, but a return to the lineup on Thursday at HoHoKam against the Seattle Mariners is more likely. The Cubs have not made an official announcement on his return.

Kerry Wood is progressing well and Wade Miller had another session of the mound.

Well that’s the news….and I’m sticking to it!!
