The Cubs Spring Training Report – Cubs Beat A’s and News from Mesa

March 6, 2006 8:44 pm By Neil Leave a Comment

Game Five: Cubs 12 – A’s 3

wflag.jpgThe Cubs pounced on the A’s on Monday in Phoenix. Todd Walker, Brian Dopirak and Angel Pagan all went yard for the Cubbies. One thing is for sure the Iowa Cubs should be a lot better this season and West Tenn should be improved as well. There will be some very good talent in AA and AAA from what I saw over the weekend. The Cubs better start working with Brandon Sing and Brian Dopirak in the outfield. Those guys look like the real deal. Dopirak hit a three-run homer and Walker added a two run shot in the first. Pierre led off the game by reaching on an error by the A’s Nick Swisher and was aboard for Walker’s home run.

Although Pierre’s numbers have not looked that good so far, just his presence will make a difference. The man always hustles. Jacque Jones went 1 for 2 and Ronny Cedeno added a hit as well. Angel Guzman picked up his first win of the spring giving up only 1 hit over 2 innings. Here is the box score from Yahoo Sports.

Tuesday – The Texas Rangers at HoHoKam Park, 2:05pm C.S.T.

Greg Maddux vs. Josh Rupe

Maddux will make his first start of the spring on Tuesday in Mesa. Let’s hope the “Combination Ball” continues to provide positive results.

News from Monday in Mesa

According to a report on FoxSports.com from the Associated Press, Jerry Hairston is out of the hospital and is expected to return to the field by midweek.

Here are the latest photos from Mesa from Yahoo Sports and those of you that missed the CCO Photo Gallery, check out the articles from those days.

Kerry Wood is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Derrek Lee and Michael Barrett will hit the field for Team USA against Team Mexico on Tuesday at 3:00pm C.S.T. Let the Cubs in the WBC watch begin….

Baseball lost one of its greats on Monday. Former Minnesota Twin Kirby Puckett passed away. I always enjoyed watching Puckett play as I was growing up.

Well that’s the news….and I’m sticking to it!!
