Introducing RSS Feeds to the CCO

November 21, 2005 3:00 am By Neil Leave a Comment

When I started Chicago Cubs Online, my goal became to create a site that all of the Cubs Faithful could rely on for Cubs News and Information and a place to discuss our beloved Cubbies. I feel the best way to do this is to provide all of the possible Cubs news sources available.

Like all of you, I want my information as soon as it is released….I do not want to wait….I want to know as soon as it happens. Believe me if I could get on the email list of Dusty Baker and Jim Hendry….I would.

Besides listening to Hendry and Baker’s conversations or hacking into their email, the best way to know what is going on are RSS Feeds. I have added a section of the CCO homepage labeled ‘Cubs News From The Wire’. That section is actually RSS Feeds from Cubs.com and Yahoo Sports. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is provided by those 2 sites (I am looking for more) and they allow sites (like Chicago Cubs Online) to provide their readers current information as soon as it is posted to the main source. In other words, as soon as Cubs.com posts a new article on the Cubs, it will show in the ‘Cubs News From The Wire’ section of Chicago Cubs Online.

The technology of RSS allows Internet users to subscribe to websites that have provided RSS feeds; these are typically sites that change or add content regularly. The RSS formats provide web content or summaries of web content together with links to the full versions of the content and other meta-data. I am not claiming the information to be mine; I am providing my readers with up to the minute links to get all of the Cubs Information they need.

I have also added a ‘Cubs News Sites’ section to my links on the left hand side of the CCO Homepage. Those links will send you directly to the Cubs sections of those websites. I am constantly looking to update those sources, so if anyone knows of other sources, please send me an email and I will add them to that section.

Also, do not forget about ‘From the CCO Vault’. From time to time I will place some of my favorite posts in there so they do not get buried in a monthly archive somewhere.

So basically Chicago Cubs Online should become your hub for everything Cubbie Blue. Thank you for a great first month.
