Period.
I know the money they want to spend has been spent but they don't have a clear-cut leadoff hitter and Johnny Damon could lead off, is less expensive now than originally thought, and adds a quality clubhouse guy and winner to the team.
Sure, defense will be an issue. Who plays center? I say try Soriano or Damon in CF and understand that is going to be a weakness.
Thoughts?

If the Cubs did not have Alfonso Soriano on their roster, I would be right there with you.
As much as I like Johnny Damon's offense, there is no where on this team for him to play.
Agree with Neil. Given the current roster, Damon doesn't make sense. An OF with Soriano and Damon would be a defensive nighmare. Also, it looks like Damon will sign for $7 million/yr. Perhaps a good deal for the club that signs him, but not a bargain.
David, I fully agree that signing Johnny Damon would be unwise; for any team, at his age, he's a gamble. Considering the budget limitations of the Cubs, he is not a good idea.
It reminds me of when the Cubs traded for an aging Ralph Kiner, and they had the "Venus De Milo" outfield (no arms) of Kiner, Hank Sauer, and Frankie Baumholtz.
