There are only 11 days before pitchers and catchers officially report to Fitch Park and the Cubs' new regime is not finished tweaking the roster.

After avoiding arbitration in January by agreeing to a one-year, $1.1 million contract for 2012, the Cubs designated Blake DeWitt for assignment Monday to make room on the 40-man roster for Adrian Cardenas. The offensive oriented utility man was a sandwich pick of the Phillies in 2006 and one of the top prospects in Oakland's organization after Billy Beane acquired him in the Joe Blanton deal in 2008. Cardenas has two minor league options left and is expected to compete for a spot on the Cubs' 25-man roster this spring.

The Cubs have not announced the signing of 19-year old lefty Gerardo Concepcion. Concepcion and the Cubs reportedly came to terms on a contract last week that could end up being worth as much as $8 million. If the reports are accurate and Concepcion agreed to a Major League deal, Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer will have to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Concepcion.

Here is the update ...

Adrian Cardenas
Baseball America ranked the newest Chicago Cub the 12th best prospect in the A's system prior to the Gio Gonzalez trade. Cardenas can hit to all fields but lacks the power to play third at the big league level ... which suits his defensive ability.

Adrian Cardenas has not developed the power that most thought he would when he was named Baseball America's High School Player of the Year in 2006. Without the power to play third, Cardenas projects as a middle infielder but he cannot field either position enough for him to be an everyday big leaguer.

Cardenas has a fluid, effortless swing and can spray the ball to all fields. According to Baseball America, he has "an innate understanding of how pitchers are trying to attack him" and he makes consistent contact but "doesn't drive the ball very often."

Defensively, Cardenas lacks true middle infield actions with fringy speed, quickness and range. He did show improvement in the field last year but played more left field than at second base or shortstop. Cardenas has an average arm and is learning out to play the outfield ... if he can get to the ball he can catch it.

Adrian Cardenas is 6-foot-0, 205 pounds and the lefty hitter, righty thrower projects more as a line-hitting utility man in the majors due to a lack of position and power.

Adrian Cardenas' Page on Baseball-Reference

Yoenis Cespedes
The agent for Yoenis Cespedes, Adam Katz, joined Holden Kushner and Jim Duquette Sunday morning during Baseball Today (MLB Network Radio/XM Radio) to discuss the latest with his client.

Adam Katz indicated at the top of the interview that Yoenis Cespedes (pronounced Yo-Ennis Sess-Puh-dess) is still blocked from signing with a team. Cespedes has not acquired an OFAC (U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control) unblocking license and Cespedes must obtain that license in order to be able to execute a contract. Katz said that Cespedes can come to terms with a team but cannot sign or play until the license is acquired.

Katz is optimistic they can get Cespedes under contract in order to get him into camp on time.

Cespedes had a rough time statistically in his brief playing time in the Dominican Republic. Katz admitted that the numbers indicated he struggled but he was told that the plate appearances were better than the results considering Cespedes was seeing game action for the first time since March (10 months).

There have been five or six teams consistently showing interest in Cespedes. Some teams have come and gone but according to Adam Katz, at no point this winter has less than five to six teams been looking at Cespedes at the same time. Katz would not comment on which teams have shown interest or might be the most interested. Katz did say that there is a strong market for him and "the kid is going to do extremely well."

Katz described Cespedes as a hard-worker with an exceptional skill set that has the right character to be very successful in the game.

Katz said his job is to get the best package [contract] he can for Cespedes. Once the teams have made their offers, he will sit down with Cespedes and go over the options. It will be up to Cespedes to determine which team he thinks fits best with him. Katz admitted it would be reasonable to think Miami might have an edge because of the Cuban community but he's not sure what Cespedes is thinking at this point.

Most of the teams that have scouted Cespedes thinks he is a first rate centerfielder but some would prefer him in a corner outfield spot. Katz was asked about comps for Cespedes. Katz said he's heard comparisons made to Sammy Sosa (by Dan Duquette), Vladimir Guerrero, Bo Jackson and Jimmy Wynn.

According to a report from Bruce Levine, the next step for Cespedes is coming to the United States to meet face-to-face with the interested teams. The plan is to have Cespedes in camp by the third week of February. Cespedes has not obtained a travel visa in order to come to the States.

Carrie Muskat confirmed the report from Bruce Levine that Esmailin Caridad received a non-roster invite to Spring Training.

Adrian Cardenas was the supplemental round pick of the Phillies in the 2006 draft (37th overall). The 24-year old (October 10, 1987) has played five seasons in professional baseball, all at the minor league level. The A's acquired Cardenas in the Joe Blanton trade, along with Matt Spencer and Josh Outman on July 17, 2008

Cardenas (throws right, bats left) played shortstop (three games), third base (13 games), second base (35 games) and left field (44 games) last season.

Winter League Wrap-up

This year's Winter Leagues saw an increase in the number of players from the organization, but an overall decrease in participation. While 33 players that were affiliated with the Cubs' system for all or part of the off-season were part of winter baseball, 19 ended up playing less than ten games with their temporary clubs. Movement played a prominent role as fans said goodbye to Austin Bibens-Dirkx, Andrew Cashner, Robert Coello, Marwin Gonzalez and Carlos Zambrano while saying hello to Alfredo Amezaga, Juan Apodaca, Anthony Rizzo, Dave Sappelt and Casey Weathers.

Some prospects, such as Junior Lake, Scott Maine, Marcos Mateo, Rebel Ridling, and Chris Rusin were effective in limited appearances. Others, such as Marco Carrillo, Bryan LaHair, Oswaldo Martinez, Blake Parker, Ryan Searle, and Kyle Smit performed well over the course of the season.

Organizational Pitcher of the Winter
Marco Carrillo: Prior to the opening of the winter leagues, Marco Carrillo was without a contract. The front office acted quickly to re-sign him, and Carrillo set off for a new role with Yaquis de Obregon: starting pitcher. The just turned 25-year old right-hander had been a jack-of-all-trades in the Cubs' system, making 40 appearances with nine games started and 11 finished in 2011. Used exclusively as a starter, Carrillo went on to post a 5-3 record with a 2.72 ERA, good for third in the Mexican Pacific League. He kept up the pace in the playoffs, sporting a 2-0 record with a 3.77 ERA, including a six-strikeout series clinching shutout. With strong pitching staffs shaping up in Iowa and Tenessee, what Carrillo's role will be for the upcoming season is somewhat of a mystery. Wherever he ends up, Carrillo will probably make that pitching staff stronger.

Organizational Player of the Winter
Bryan LaHair: In a somewhat stormy winter, Bryan LaHair went a long way to erase some doubts in his ability. The big left-hander took the Venezuelan League by storm, hitting .290 with seven home runs and 14 RBI in the first five weeks of the season, including taking former Cubs' starter Carlos Zambrano deep. Shortly afterward, LaHair left Navegantes del Magallanes. While there have been many rumors as to why LaHair left, he returned on November 27.

LaHair struggled in his return, leading to some harsh criticism from local media in Venezuela. He then left Magallanes briefly, only to return again in December. From there, LaHair was a force. He ended up by hitting .272 with 15 home runs to lead Venezuela, including 29 RBI and an on-base percentage of .404. LaHair received nine intentional walks and demonstrated that he can hold his own in left field.

Best Game of the Winter
There were many candidates for this year's Game of the Winter. Among those were Team USA's intense 2-1 loss to Team Canada in the Pan-Am Gold Medal game; Marco Carrillo and Yaquis De Obregon rallying twice to defeat Hermosillo 3-2 in a 16 inning marathon; Bryan LaHair's return to Navagantes de Magallanes and a 2-for-3, 2 home run game; and Ryan Searle's complete game, five-strikeout performance in Brisbane's 7-3 victory over Melbourne. However, to spotlight once again was in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rican League: Indios de Mayaguez 2 - Criollos de Caguas 0

With the league championship series tied at 1-1, Mayaguez manager Dave Miley made an unusual call and started Boston reliever Justin Thomas. Thomas had appeared in only nine games for the Indians, with no starts. After allowing one hit in two innings, Thomas gave up a double and a walk with two outs in the third inning. Miley summoned Iowa reliever Kyle Smit, who got the Tribe out of the jam. Smit was then staked to a two-run lead as a sacrifice fly by Marlins prospect Jeff Dominguez and a single by Jesus Feliciano to put Mayaguez ahead 2-0. Smit then had his longest outing in nearly two years, eventually tossing 4.1 innings, striking out three, and shutting out the Creoles. White Sox farmhand Ryan Kussmaul recorded an out to earn a hold, while Dodgers pitcher Ramon Troncosco went 1.2 scoreless innings for the save as Kyle Smit got credit for the victory.

Player to Watch
Arismendy Alcantara: The 20 year old switch-hitting infielder played in only four games for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican League, but was able to make his presence felt. Arismendy Alcantara hit .400 in his ten at bats, with a double and an RBI. While that can be considered a small sample size, Alcantara was able to show he belonged with much older and experienced players. Alcantara had a successful 2011, where he batted .271 in 99 games for Single-A Peoria. Perhaps the experience could have a similar effect as it did last year to former Cubs' prospect Marwin Gonzalez, and be a springboard to greater success.

Next Favorite Team
Naranjeros de Hermosillo: I was set to name Navegantes Del Magallanes with this honor before they started playing games with Bryan LaHair. Well, maybe next year.

The Orangemen were next on the list with their striking black-and-orange uniforms, cool logo(left), rabid fans, and the success of Iowa pitcher Blake Parker.

Caribbean World Series
Even with the somewhat balmy winter being experienced in Chicago, 80 degrees in the Dominican Republic is nice to think about.

The Caribbean World Series opened on Thursday with a couple of tight games. In the opener, the Puerto Rico rode the arm of Blue Jays pitcher Nelson Figueroa, as he allowed only an earned run in 6.2 innings as they topped Venezuela 3-1. In the second game, the Dominican Republic pitching staff limited Mexico to three hits and struck out nine in route to a 2-1 victory. Cubs' infielder Alfredo Amezaga was 0-for-4 in the game.

On Friday, it was Mexico's turn to come up with a big pitching performance, as Randy Keisler scattered four hits and struck out five to blank Puerto Rico 2-0. The nightcap saw the first offensive explosion of the series, as the Dominican Republic rallied for three runs in the top of the 13th to get past Venezuela 5-2.

With all teams now settled in on Saturday, the offenses started heating up. In the first game, Alfredo Amezaga reached on a sacrifice bunt in the sixth inning and later came around to score. Mexico came back from a 2-1 deficit to end up defeating Venezuela 4-2. Amezaga was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a sacrifice.

Game 2 saw the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico locked in a tight 2-1 battle after four innings. However, Puerto Rico's pitchers couldn't hold back the Dominicans, as they added four more runs to take home a 6-1 victory.

The standings after the first half of the double round-robin are the Dominican Republic 3-0, Mexico 2-1, Puerto Rico 1-2, and Venezuela 0-3. The tournament concludes on Tuesday, February 7.

Australian Baseball League
The Perth Heat advanced to the Australian championship series by taking the opening round from the Melbourne Aces three games to one. Perth then got a bye for the second round as Melbourne faced the Sydney Blue Sox. The Sox moved into the next round by defeating the Adelaide Bite by winning three in their best-of-five series. The Sydney Blue Sox then had Melbourne on the brink of elimination by going ahead 2-1 in the second round. However, Melbourne took both ends of a doubleheader to end up facing Perth for the championship. The finals will begin on Friday.

The countdown to pitchers and catchers officially reporting to Spring Training has begun. It is only 13 days before the first workout for Cubs' pitchers and catchers at Fitch Park. The first full squad workout is on February 24 and the Cubs' first Cactus League game against the A's is less than a month away (March 4) ... Cubs baseball is just around the corner.

The Cubs have more roster decisions to make in the near future. According to multiple reports, the contract Gerardo Concepcion agreed to is a Major League deal. Concepcion would have to be added to the 40-man roster once the deal is official. The Cubs will have to open a spot to add the southpaw to the big league roster.

The next seven to ten days should also see Yoenis Cespedes sign with a team. The Cubs are considered one of the front-runners to sign Cespedes as well as Jorge Soler, once Soler establishes residency in the Dominican Republic and MLB makes him eligible to begin negotiating with teams.

Here is the update on 'big game' Sunday ...

Matt Garza
The Cubs and Matt Garza avoided the arbitration process Friday when the two sides agreed to a deal but both parties ended up in St. Petersburg for the hearing ... that never took place.

According to Bruce Levine (Talkin' Baseball, ESPN 1000), the Cubs sent six-seven people to Florida for Garza's arbitration hearing and the two sides agreed to the contract just prior to the start of the hearing.

The Cubs have two years of control on Matt Garza, counting the upcoming season, and he should make somewhere between $12 and $14 million in the final year of arbitration eligibility (Garza was a Super Two). Levine thinks if the Cubs cannot sign Garza to a long-term deal between now and Opening Day that he will be traded. A long-term contract for Garza could end up being in the five-year and $60 to $70 million range according to Levine.

The Cubs cannot afford [not in terms of money] for him to go into the last year of club control still on his current deal. Garza becomes a lot less valuable on the market with just one year remaining under team control and would hurt the Cubs process of building for the future.

According to Levine, teams the Cubs have talked to this off-season about Garza includes the Rangers, Diamondbacks and Red Sox but they could not agree on a package of players the Cubs feel Garza is worth. The Cubs feel they should receive three to four top prospects for Matt Garza.

Gerardo Concepcion
The Cubs have not announced the signing of Gerardo Concepcion but are expected to very soon. The hold-up is apparently him passing his physical ... there have not been any indications there will be any issues with Concepcion passing his physical.

The contract Concepcion signed is for a guaranteed $7 million according to Bruce Levine (Talkin' Baseball, ESPN 1000) and will be for at least four years ... plus it will be a Major League deal.

The Cubs will have to add Concepcion to the 40-man roster, which will require another roster move to create a spot for the young southpaw.

Gerardo Concepcion is expected to start the season in low Class-A, either with full season Peoria or short-season Boise.

Yoenis Cespedes
According to Bruce Levine (Talkin' Baseball, ESPN 1000), the Cubs are going to do everything they can to make sure they sign Yoenis Cespedes. The Miami media thinks it is a foregone conclusion that he will end up signing with the Marlins. Levine thinks Ozzie Guillen's new team will be in a big battle with the Cubs and White Sox over Cespedes ... and the outfielder could end up inking a six-year contract worth between $50 to $60 million.

Yoenis Cespedes should sign with a team in the next week to ten days so he can be in camp to compete for a job out of Spring Training.

Jim Hendry on Talkin' Baseball
The former general manager of the Chicago Cubs joined Bruce Levine and Fred Huebner at the top of the second hour of Talkin' Baseball (ESPN 1000) Saturday morning. Hendry sounded refreshed and ready to begin his new position with the New York Yankees ... and had nothing but good things to say about his former team.

Hendry is excited about joining the Yankees organization. He said he was ready to get back into the game and feels this is the right opportunity for him. The decision to take the job with the Yankees actually happened two weeks ago.

Several organizations were interested in hiring Jim Hendry but he feels the job with the Yankees is the best fit. Hendry explained that it was important for him to be in what he felt was the right environment and his good relationship with Brian Cashman helped lead to the decision.

Hendry said anyone that has ever been in baseball or grew up watching the game would want to be a part of the Yankees organization. Hendry and Larry Rothschild actually had a similar talk last year before Hendry let Rothschild out of his contract to take the pitching coach job with New York.

Hendry explained he feels Cashman really wanted him as a part of his team and the good relationship over the years helped with the decision.

Bruce Levine asked Hendry how he thinks the Cubs off-season has gone so far. Earlier in the interview Hendry said he had a good relationship with Theo Epstein while Epstein was in Boston. He thinks Theo has a long-term plan and the Cubs will be good down the road. The plans that Tom Ricketts has for the facilities in the Dominican Republic and in Mesa will help with the development of the players. Hendry also alluded to the planned changes for Wrigley Field will help the Cubs in the long run as well.

Over time the Cubs will be very good according to Hendry. Theo Epstein is doing the best he can to get younger and cut payroll to try to save a little money. Hendry added, "Certainly down the road, the moves that are being made will be good for the Cubs."

Hendry does not think he would have done things much differently during his time with the Cubs. He might have stepped away a little better when the job called for him to take a breathier. Hendry pointed out it is hard to think how the job is affecting you [health wise] in the moment. Hendry feels he did the best he could with not the deepest staff.

Jim Hendry has no animosity toward anyone with the Cubs. Hendry acknowledged there was a lot of change toward the end of his tenure [ownership changes] but he wishes them [the entire organization] well.

News, Notes and Rumors
Bruce Levine is expecting Bud Selig to make his decision on the compensation for Theo Epstein in the upcoming week ... next week at the latest.

According to Bruce Levine (Talkin' Baseball, ESPN 1000), the Cubs are still very interested in signing Jorge Soler.

And for those that were concerned about Brett Jackson's appearance at the Cubs Convention, apparently he has cut his hair and shaved his beard.

With the addition of Caridad, the Cubs NRI list currently has 22 players on it.

Here's the update ...

Gerardo Concepcion
The Cubs have not announced the signing of Gerardo Concepcion but the deal is expected to be worth as much as $8 million. The contract reportedly includes $7 million in guaranteed money and with incentives it could max out around the $8 million range.

There are also reports that the contract Concepcion signed is a Major League deal. If the reports are accurate, the Cubs will have to make another roster move to open a spot for him on the 40-man roster.

Ryan Rowland-Smith
According to multiple reports, the Cubs signed 29-year old southpaw Ryan Rowland-Smith to a minor league contract. Smith posted solid numbers in 2008 and 2009 with the Mariners before struggling to a 1-10 record in 2010 (6.75 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP in 27 games, 20 starts).

Rowland-Smith spent last season in the Astros' minor league system.

After a brief two games in Rookie ball, Rowland-Smith posted a 2-10 record in 22 games, 19 starts, at the Triple-A level with a 6.19 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP.

Ryan Rowland-Smith's Page on Baseball-Reference

Jorge Soler
Baseball America ran scouting reports for several of the Cuban players garnering attention this off-season ... among those players was Jorge Soler.

The Cubs have been linked to Jorge Soler all winter. Many feel the Cubs will be in the middle of the bidding for Soler once he can begin negotiating with teams. Unlike Yoenis Cespedes, Soler has not established residency in the Dominican Republic ... which is the first step in him becoming eligible to sign with a big league team.

Soler, 19 years old, will need a couple of years in the minors before he is ready for a shot in the majors. Soler has a very high ceiling with the offensive and defensive potential to be a productive right fielder at the Major League level.

Soler is listed at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds and according to Baseball America, he stands out for his thick, physical build and strength. Soler has great power, bat speed, the ability to hit balls to all fields and a 25 home run potential. Soler is athletic for his size with a 60-yard dash time that grades out as above average speed ... and his above-average arm can handle right field.

According to Baseball America, "while scouts like his power and some like his swing, he bars his front arm and the stiffness in his stroke is a concern for some scouts." There is concern about his ability to hit breaking pitches but he has good pitch recognition and more on-base potential than Yoenis Cespedes.

Jorge Soler is represented by Bart Hernandez and turns 20 on February 25.

Geovany Soto
Geovany Soto joined Casey Stern and Todd Hollandsworth during Inside Pitch (MLB Network Radio/XM Radio) on Thursday afternoon and discussed his thoughts on the changes with the Cubs.

Geovany Soto sounded happy about the changes that have taken place with the Cubs this off-season. Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer have come in with a great attitude and a new vibe. Soto thinks the Cubs are going to be just fine moving forward under the new leadership. Soto explained that Epstein and Hoyer are doing a great job tweaking the roster.

As for the Cubs' new skipper, Soto had a chance to talk to Dale Sveum during the convention and described his new manager as "a Baseball Bible". According to Soto, Sveum knows everything about the game and is real old school.

Soto is looking forward to having more of a leadership role on the team. He discussed the importance of the team being able to play the game the right way and manufacture runs. He added in order for them to win games they are going to have to do all of the little things it takes to score runs because they probably are not going to him many home runs.

Carlos Zambrano was briefly discussed. Soto gave a simple answer and said, "I feel both parties needed a change."

Soto is looking forward to working with Travis Wood and admitted he has a lot of work to do when camp begins. Soto has to learn all of the different pitchers brought in this winter and will try to catch more innings with the guys he doesn't know in Spring Training.

Matt Garza appears to be staying with the Cubs, at least for now, and Soto is very happy Garza is still a Cub. Garza has a great attitude and knows how to pitch. Soto feels once he puts it all together, Garza will be an ace.

Soto was not happy with his performance last year. He admitted he did not use the entire field like he has to in order to be successful. Soto explained he became way too pull happy and must hit the ball where it is pitched.

Geovany Soto thinks the first weeks of Spring Training, between camp and the games, can set a tone for the entire season. Soto is looking forward to having a fresh start and seeing what type of team the Cubs will have during the upcoming season.

News and Notes
According to a report from the Sun-Times, Mike Quade took issue with Dale Sveum's comments about the Cubs' effort (or lack of it) last season.

Mike Quade has some advice for Robin Ventura on how to deal with the Chicago media.

The Red Sox hired former Cubs' scout Gary Hughes. Hughes will serve as a Special Assistant to GM Ben Cherington. Hughes is widely regarded as one of the best scouts in the game. Jim Hendry and Gary Hughes go way back but find themselves in the middle of what ESPN calls the best rivalry in all of sports.

The Cubs were one of the teams rumored to be interested in signing reliever Todd Coffey ... but the veteran right-hander agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The one-year deal with an option was announced Friday.

Can you sense the sarcasm? Good, because I am laying it on pretty thick.

And as I am typing this, word breaks across the wire that the Cubs landed themselves a 19-year-old Cuban prodigy. I am pretty sure that I had something to with that by typing the opening paragraph at the precise time I did. You are welcome.

And I digress, it has been rather quiet so new prospect lists are a good way to create conversation and discussion and debate. Who is the Cubs best prospect? I have no idea. That is as honest as I can be.

So, let's shake it up with some ramblings on a Friday. And I sure hope this can create some good banter to get the Super weekend started.

Welcome to the Chicago Cubs organization, Gerardo Concepcion!

Madonna is the halftime entertainment at the Super Bowl. I prefer Madonna as the entertainment in the thrilling legal feature "Body of Evidence."

FIFTEEN DAYS!!

Scotty B. is not having a lot of success this offseason. Outside of Prince, it is just a slew of one-year contracts.

I am not upset that Scotty B. is not as successful as usual.

Yoenis, Soler, Yoenis, Soler, Yoenis, Soler, can we please get some action going soon?

Happy belated Birthday to Mr. Cub!

FIFTEEN DAYS!!

I think it is clear that I like Tom Ricketts. But I have to keep the love flowing. He is throwing more money into the Dominican, and the Cubs will have the best facility in the country.

Hard to knock that in any way, shape or form. This man gets it. This whole thing is moving in a new direction, and it is exciting as hell.

I am really looking forward to seeing Brett Jackson and Anthony Rizzo in Spring Training. My gut tells me B-Jax is ready, and he is just waiting to prove it.

Overall though, I am very excited about Matt Szczur the most.

What Cubs prospect are you most excited about? Please share with the class.

FIFTEEN DAYS!!

Baseball America is in love with Baez. That is going out on a limb as far as I'm concerned. Ranking a totally unproven player second in an organization just seems silly.

Then again, I am sure the good folks at BA really care about my thoughts.

How much money is Garza going to get?

I really hope Starlin's legal troubles are resolved by Spring Training. And if he's guilty, he should do the time.

My point being is that I really would hate to have this hover over the entire team. History shows one person's problems can have a horrible effect on a group.

Derrick Rose is unbelievably good.

FIFTEEN DAYS!!

When the Cubs new facility opens in Mesa, the team will have two unbelievable practice facilities in two different countries. That is just good stuff.

With the increase in international complexes, I would not be surprised to see teams start building bases near the Pacific Rim. Especially based on the results of the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

For all of you planning on getting to Arizona this spring, that is awesome. Enjoy.

Also, I am extremely jealous.

I perused the list of non-roster invitees. If any make the 25-man roster, I would bet on Manny Corpas or Alfredo Amezaga. How about you?

Again, welcome Gerardo. All the best!

FIFTEEN DAYS!!

Enjoy your Super Bowl weekend. Next sports stop: SPRING TRAINING!!

Thanks for riding along. We, at the CCO, eagerly await the day's discussion. It always makes a Friday even better.

And until next time ...

Stay Classy Cubs Fans!!

According to a report from el Nuevo Herald (in Spanish), the Cubs stepped up and showed more willingness to sign Gerardo Concepcion than the other teams that were interested. The Cubs think they can turn Concepcion into a frontline starter. Concepcion established residency in Mexico and has been working out for teams in the Dominican Republic.

Scouting Report on Gerardo Concepcion
Gerardo Concepcion was named rookie of the year in Cuba in 2010-2011. Concepcion posted a 3.36 ERA in 101 2/3 innings with 53 strikeouts and 43 walks facing older competition in Cuba.

Concepcion throws a fastball that ranges anywhere from 86-92 MPH and features a mid-70s curveball that shows good depth at times but can get loopy. Concepcion also features a change-up that some have called a splitter ... either pitch is consider a work in progress.

Some think Concepcion might end up a fourth or fifth starter in a big league rotation.

Gerardo Concepcion could begin the season in Low Class-A with the Peoria Chiefs or in Short-Season A-ball with the Boise Hawks.

The CCO's off-season look at the Cubs' farm system continues with our list of the top 20 prospects in the Cubs' system.

Like the big league team, several of the top prospects down on the farm dealt with injuries ... and those injuries might have kept players like Brett Jackson, Trey McNutt and Rob Whitenack from getting a call to the Show.

The Cubs' system has a much different look than a year ago. The commitment made to the draft added quality players to what was already considered a deep system. The big knock on the organization is the lack of impact talent, both on the mound and in the field.

For the second year in a row, Brett Jackson tops the CCO's list of the top prospects in the Cubs' system with Anthony Rizzo, Trey McNutt, Matt Szczur and Josh Vitters rounding out the top five.

#1 - Brett Jackson, OF
Brett Jackson is likely the next prospect in line to make his big league debut. Jackson is coming off a very good year in only his second full season of pro ball.

The former first round pick of the Cubs in 2009 (31st overall pick) will not turn 24 until August (August 2, 1988) ... and while player comps are typically dangerous, the comparison, both offensively and defensively, to Jim Edmonds is intriguing.

Brett Jackson would have made his big league debut last season if not for an injury that put him on the DL at the same time Marlon Byrd was on the shelf. Jackson hurt his pinkie sliding back into second base in May and ended up on the disabled list. Once Jackson returned, the Cubs decided to leave him in the minors to finish the year instead of adding him to the 40-man roster ... and it was the right move.

Jackson was slated to play in the Arizona Fall League but opted to represent his country in the Pan Am Games.

After putting together a good first full year of pro ball in 2010, Jackson excelled last season and put together a 20-20 season between the time spent in Double-A and Triple-A. Jackson was good with the Smokies but appeared to take his game to the next level with the I-Cubs.

Jackson posted a .256/.373/.443/.816 line in 67 games with the Smokies and hit 10 doubles, three triples and 10 home runs. In 48 games with the I-Cubs, Jackson put together a .297/.388/.551/.939 line with 13 doubles, two triples and 10 home runs.

Brett Jackson will be in his third straight big league camp and will likely begin the season as the starting centerfielder for the Iowa Cubs. Jackson has grown up in a short amount of time and his talents should be on display at Wrigley in the very near future.

#2 - Anthony Rizzo, 1B
In a high profile deal, the Cubs acquired the left-handed hitting Anthony Rizzo from the San Diego Padres this winter for former number one draft pick Andrew Cashner. Rizzo has been a highly sought player by the Cubs' new management team, drafted by them while they were with the Red Sox in the sixth round in 2007 and acquired as part of the Adrian Gonzalez trade in 2010 (check).

Rizzo has made progress since being drafted as a 17-year old. After successfully dealing with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2008, he spent his first full minor league season in 2009 split between Single-A Greenville and Advanced-A Salem. Between them, he hit .297 with 12 home runs and 66 RBI in 119 games. He split his season again in 2010, appearing at Salem and Double-A Portland. While his average suffered, hitting .260 overall, his power increased to 25 homers and 100 RBI.

With his future somewhat blocked in the Red Sox organization by prospect Lars Anderson, Rizzo was made part of the deal that brought Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to Boston. Placed at San Diego's Triple-A team in Tucson, Rizzo tore up the Pacific Coast League, slugging his way to a .365 average, 16 home runs, 53 RBI, and an OPS of 1.159 in 52 games. He was then brought up to the big leagues in June, where he went 3-for-7 in his first three games, with a double, triple, and home run. However, he was demoted back to Tucson a month later after batting .143 with 36 strikeouts in 98 at bats.

In acquiring Rizzo, Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer, and Jason McLeod have made a plan to ease him slowly back to the majors. They retained first baseman Bryan LaHair, and it appears Rizzo will begin the season at Triple-A Iowa. He'll have some things to improve on, as he hit only .172 against left-handed pitching. Exclusively playing first base, he only has a career fielding percentage of .989 with 27 errors over the past two seasons. However, his .951 range factor is better than LaHair's (.876).

At only 22 years-old, Rizzo brings a big bat and a high ceiling to the North Side. How soon he gets there will be determined by how he improves his game.

#3 - Trey McNutt, RHP
After opening a lot of eyes in 2010, the injury bug bit Kenneth Trey McNutt in 2011. McNutt spent a majority of the spring in big league camp and never really got on track. McNutt struggled with blister issues in the spring and at the start of the season. Once he seemed to put the blister problem behind him, he was injured during a collision on the base paths and dealt with the rib injury for the rest of the year.

Trey McNutt struggled with his command when he was on the mound but when he was on, McNutt showed why he was the top pitching prospect in the organization.

McNutt was 5-6 in only 23 games, 22 starts, last year with a 4.55 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. McNutt struck out 65 batters in 95 innings, while walking 39 and surrendering 120 hits ... a big difference from the 10-1 record in 25 starts in three stops (Peoria, Daytona and Tennessee) in 2010 (with 132 strikeouts, 37 walks and 83 hits in 116 1/3 innings).

McNutt can hit 98 MPH on his fastball but seems to control it better when he sits in the 92-94 MPH range. The young right-hander has a very good breaking ball (most think the best in the system) that has the velocity of a slider but the break of a traditional curveball. McNutt's change-up is still a work in progress.

The former 32nd round pick in the 2009 draft will not turn 23 until August (August 2, 1989) and he needs to put together a bounce-back season and show the new regime that 2010 was not a fluke.

Trey McNutt received an invite to big league camp for the second spring in a row and could make his Major League debut at some point during the upcoming season.

#4 - Matt Szczur, OF
Following the 2010 season, Matt Szczur was faced with a difficult choice. A wide receiver at Division I-AA Villanova, he was rated as a possible high round draft choice by respected expert Mel Kiper Jr. However, Szczur (pronounced Caesar) torched Northwest League pitching, hitting .397 in 18 games for the Boise Hawks. Szczur would end with a .347 average in 25 games over three levels of competition before returning to Villanova to complete his senior season. A high ankle sprain limited him to only four games, and his NFL draft stock dropped.

Szczur accepted a $1.4 million bonus to play baseball exclusively prior to the 2011 season and was assigned to Single-A Peoria. He tore up Midwest League pitching to the tune of .314 with five home runs, 27 RBI, and 17 stolen bases, mostly from the lead-off position. Szczur was also named the league's best defensive outfielder.

After 66 games with the Chiefs, Szczur was promoted to Advanced-A Daytona, where he floundered a bit in the pitching -rich Florida State League. Szczur ended up hitting only .260 for the D-Cubs, but seemed to come around toward the end of the season. In the playoffs for the eventual champions, Szczur hit .368. He demonstrated good pitch selection at Peoria, walking 21 times while only striking out 28 times in 274 at bats. He was also able to lay down several bunt hits.

With his sub-4.50 speed in the forty yard dash, Szczur would probably become the fastest player in the majors when he arrives. If he keeps on improving, his arrival could happen faster than his forty-time.

#5 - Josh Vitters, 3B/1B
Perhaps no other minor leaguer in the Cubs' system grew as much as a player last season as Josh Vitters. It seems as though many Cubs fans have been waiting "forever" for the 2007 first round draft pick to develop, but the now 22-year old appears to have turned the corner.

Coming into the 2011 season, there were some observers who felt that Vitters was only starting at Double-A Tennessee due to his lofty draft status. The previous season, Vitters hit only .223 in 63 games with the Smokies while coming back from a broken hand. However, Tennessee was an offensive powerhouse in the Southern League in 2011, with a team batting average over .300 for the first two months of the season. As the Smokies' best players were winnowed away through promotions, Vitters stepped into the leadership void in clubhouse.

While it doesn't show up in the cold, hard statistics, Vitters always seemed to be delivering a clutch hit in a key situation for the first -half champions, as they fell just 2.5 games short of a second half crown. For the year, Vitters' 14 home runs tied him for 15th in the league, while his team-leading 81 RBI were good for eighth, as he ended up hitting .283. Vitters followed that up with a sizzling Arizona Fall League. Playing the majority of his time as the Solar Sox's DH (Vitters also played at first base and in the outfield), he wound up seventh in hitting at .360, out-producing high-profile prospects such as Bryce Harper and Mike Olt.

Defensively, Vitters is blessed with a powerful arm, but has yet to develop as a third baseman. He committed 21 errors in 100 games at third in 2011, the most at any single stop in his career. His .903 fielding average mirrored his career average of .906.

As he looks to start 2012 at Triple-A Iowa, will Vitters defense improve enough for him to be considered at third by the parent club? Or will Vitters go the way of many defensively challenged third basemen and shift to first base or the outfield? One thing is for sure, you can't teach clutch hitting.

#6 - Jae-Hoon Ha, OF
Perhaps no other top prospect in the Cubs' system is more overlooked than Jae-Hoon Ha. In fact, his numbers and pace of development rivals that of some of the top prospects in the game. The only thing seeming to hold him back in many scout's eyes is the lack of one overall outstanding tool.

Ha was an international signing out of Jin Ju City in the Republic of Korea in 2009 as a catcher. Ha spent the entire 2009 season at Short Season-A Boise, where he was converted to outfield and hit an uninspired .242 in 65 games. He was held back in extended spring training in 2010, but summoned to Peoria when prized infield prospect Hak-Ju Lee got off to a slow start. Ha was supposed to help settle Lee down, which he ended up doing. However, Ha surprised minor league officials by batting .317 with seven home runs and 46 RBI in 77 games, while displaying some previously unknown speed and athleticism.

Ha was promoted to Advanced-A Daytona to start the 2011 season and placed under some extra pressure. He was asked to play centerfield for the first time in his career, and was miscast as a run-producing fourth and fifth place hitter. Ha struggled some with the higher quality pitching, but still managed to hit .311 with six home runs and 26 RBI in 151 at bats. He was then brought to Double-A Tennessee to replace an injured Brett Jackson. In 12 games, Ha hit .267 with a homer and seven RBI. He returned to Daytona where he slumped, ending up with a .276 average, eight home runs, and 47 RBI.

Ha was brought up to Tennessee for good in mid-July as Jackson was promoted. Installed as the team's number two hitter, Ha went on to hit .287 with two home runs, 17 RBI and six stolen bases in the second half. More importantly, Ha was seen as a positive influence in the clubhouse, endearing himself to his teammates with his enthusiasm and style of play. Ha was clearly the Smokies' best hitter in the playoffs, hitting .313 with two homers and five RBI.

Ha turned just 21-years old at the end of October. Baseball America rated him the system's best defensive outfielder. Ha still has some aspects of his game he needs to improve, as his 13 stolen bases in 30 attempts can attest. His 6-foot-1, 185 pound frame looks as if it can hold another thirty plus pounds. He is expected to start at Tennessee, with a promotion to Triple-A Iowa looming as others are promoted.

#7 - Jeimer Candelario, 3B
If any prospect embodies the plate discipline/grind-it-out approach of the new Cubs' management, 18-year old switch-hitter Jeimer Candelario fits the bill. Signed to the Dominican Academy in 2011, Candelario took the Dominican Summer League by storm. He ended up the league's fifth best hitter with a .337 average, and his 53 RBI were good for second place. In a league not conducive to home runs, Candelario still popped five round-trippers. However, it's his patience and batting eye that set him apart. Candelario drew 50 walks, far more than any other hitter in the top ten, while only striking out 42 times in 249 at bats.

As far as his defense, Candelario committed 17 errors in 195 chances on the sun baked fields of the DR, where temperatures normally exceeded 100 degrees. One should also keep in mind that Candelario just turned 18 at the end of November, and still has a lot of growing to do. It appears that he will at least be at Short Season-A Boise for the 2012 season, if not Single-A Peoria.

#8 - Ronald Torreyes, 2B
Acquired in the Sean Marshall trade with the Cincinnati Reds, Ronald Torreyes may end up being the "jewel in the crown" of that deal. Signed by the Reds in 2010, Torreyes set the Venezuelan Summer League on fire by hitting .390 with 33 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 67 games. He went to Arizona to finish the season with the Reds' rookie team, and hit .349 with 11 RBI in 18 games. Torreyes then spent six games with Single-A Dayton, batting .240 in 25 plate appearances.

Back in Dayton in 2011, Torreyes slashed his way to a .356 average with 41 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 67 games. He finally settled into the second base position, where he fielded .989 in 263 chances.

Despite his clear offensive ability, there are some question marks going into the 2012 season. Although there was no mention of injury, Torreyes played in only half of Dayton's games. His 5-foot-9, 140 pound frame will need some extra muscle to stand up to a full season. His size also limits him to strictly a middle infield role. And his only 60% success rate may mean he is limited as a base stealer. However, considering the fact that like Jeimer Candelario, he is very young and had a high level of success early in his career, his future may be bright.

#9 - Javier Baez, SS
The glare of the spotlight will be directly on Javier Baez in 2012, the Cubs' first round draft pick in 2011. Baez comes to the organization with the reputation of having a big bat that the ball jumps off of. His reported excellent bat speed has scouts believing that he will hit for power. He is also reported to have a strong arm and quick hands on defense. However, Baez comes with a number of red flags.

While Baez played shortstop, his lack of range was evident in his six errors in only 27 chances. Some scouts feel that he will eventually move to third base, but his 6-foot, 180 pound build isn't prototypical for the position. That's why, with his compact frame, some are predicting a possible move to the catcher position. Baez is also an ultra-aggressive hitter, who lacks plate discipline. He is also rumored to have a cocky attitude.

Baez should get a healthy dose of maturity from Boise manager and former major-leaguer Mark Johnson and respected Peoria manager Casey Kopitzke, where he is expected to play this summer. If Baez learns his lessons well, the Cubs could have a very explosive offensive player in their future.

#10 - Jeff Beliveau, LHP
Perhaps the most decorated pitcher in the Cubs' system, Jeffrey Beliveau started out as an unassuming 18th round draft pick in 2008. Since then, he has been named Organizational Pitcher-of-the-Year, a member of the World Cup/Pam-Am team, and been invited to the Arizona Fall League. Not bad for a player some would call a mere set-up man.

Beliveau saw time as both a starter and reliever in his first two seasons, with ERA's of 2.80 in 2008 and 3.54 in 2009 while playing for the Peoria Chiefs. It wasn't until 2010 that the decision was made to use Beliveau strictly in relief, and his career took off from there. Beliveau had a 1.59 ERA and struck out 23 batters in six games at Peoria and was quickly promoted to Advanced-A Daytona. There, Beliveau was 4-2 with a 2.89 ERA in 40 appearances. He struck out 74 and walked 23 while picking up two saves.

In 2011, Beliveau was back in Daytona to start the season. But a microscopic ERA of 0.52 and 20 strikeouts against six walks in 12 outings had him quickly packing for eastern Tennessee. With the Double-A Smokies, Beliveau became the main cog in a bullpen that consistently slammed the door on opponents. He was 6-1 with a 1.89 ERA in 57 innings. He struck out 69 and walked only 13 batters for a WHIP of 0.877. Beliveau followed that up by going 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in four appearances during the Baseball World Cup. He also pitched a scoreless inning as the USA took the silver medal in the Pan-Am games. Then it was off to Arizona where he was practically unhittable for his first three appearances, before giving up three runs in his final game.

Beliveau sports a fastball in the 87 mph range, along with a curve and a change-up. However, he relies on better than average movement on his pitches to keep hitter off-guard and induce ground balls. Beliveau is reported to have a great pick-off move that keeps runners in check. He is expected to compete for the left-handed spot in the Cubs bullpen vacated by the trade of Sean Marshall.

#11 - Junior Lake, SS/3B
Junior Lake is one of the most intriguing prospects in the Cubs' system. Lake could end up being a difference maker, a pitcher or one of the thousands of players that never make it out of the minors.

Lake is very young (March 27, 1990), in fact three days younger than Starlin Castro, and has shown in spurts that he has the tools to be a successful big league ballplayer.

The 6-foot-3, 215 pound shortstop could be in for a position change ... either a move to third or to right field.

Lake was very good with the D-Cubs last season (.315/.336/.498/.834 with 11 doubles, four triples and six home runs in 49 games) but struggled after he was promoted to Double-A Tennessee (.248/.300/.380/.680 with 10 doubles, two triples and six home runs in 67 games). Lake is extremely aggressive at the plate, like a majority of the Cubs system, and has not figured out that taking a walk and using his speed on the bases is a good thing. Lake walked only 19 times in 478 plate appearances last year.

The Cubs are hoping his performance in the AFL (.296/.352/.548/.900 with eight doubles, three triples, five home runs and 18-for-18 in stolen bases in 28 games) is a sign that Lake is starting to figure things out.

Lake has a tremendous arm (80 on the 20-80 scouting scale) and could have the best arm in the minors ... just not in the Cubs' system.

Junior Lake was added to the Cubs' 40-man roster this winter and will participate in his first big league camp. Lake will likely begin the year in Double-A, but if he can prove his performance in the AFL was not a fluke, Triple-A and maybe even the big leagues could be in his near future.

#12 - Rafael Dolis, RHP
Rafael Dolis is another former position player the Cubs have converted into a pitcher. The Cubs signed Dolis as a shortstop in 2004 (Jose Serra) but prior to coming to the states they put him on a mound. Dolis hurt is elbow in 2007 and spent the entire 2008 season recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Dolis began last season in the Smokies' rotation before moving to the pen. Dolis excelled as a reliever despite the occasional command issues that made some of his late inning performances more dramatic than necessary. Dolis finished last season 8-5 in 51 games, four starts, with a 3.22 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. Dolis saved 17 games for the Smokies before being called up to the Show in September.

The 22-year old, 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander has been compared to Carlos Marmol, because when he is on he can make hitters look bad at the plate. Dolis throws a fastball in the 93-100 MPH range with heavy sink and a slider in the mid-80s with a sharp bite.

Dolis focused on keeping the ball down and command last season which accounted for his strikeout rate dropping but his groundball rate increasing.

Rafael Dolis will compete for a spot in the Cubs' pen this spring but he figures to get his first experience at the Triple-A level to begin the year.

#13 - Welington Castillo, C
Oneri Fleita has compared Welington Castillo to Yadier Molina for years and the upcoming season will be a big one for the soon-to-be 25-year old catcher (April 24, 1987). Castillo has shown flashes both offensively and defensively that he has the tools to be a big league catcher ... but he has yet to put both parts of his game together in the same season.

Castillo has the arm and quick release to limit a team's running game. Defensively the questions have been his ability to call a game and handle a pitching staff.

Welington Castillo dealt with injuries last season that began in the spring (thumb and hamstring) and ended up limiting him to just 75 minor league games. Castillo hit .286/.351/.524/.875 with nine doubles and 15 home runs in 61 games for the Iowa Cubs.

Castillo should have received more playing time in the majors but between his own health issues and Mike Quade trying to save his job, Castillo played in only four games for the Cubs last season.

Welington Castillo will complete for the back-up catcher's job this spring along with Steve Clevenger. Instead of sitting on a bench in the big leagues, Castillo would be better off learning and playing at the Triple-A level.

#14 - Dae-Eun Rhee, RHP
Dae-Eun Rhee is healthy and is primed for a big season. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2009 and working to get back in 2010, the soon-to-be 23-year old (March 23, 1989) is coming off a good season with the Daytona Cubs.

Rhee posted an 8-7 record in 25 games, 17 starts, with four complete games. Rhee allowed 68 runs, 57 earned (4.02 ERA) in 127 2/3 innings with 117 strikeouts and just 43 walks (1.36 WHIP). Rhee showed improvement as the season wore on and posted a 3-0 record in six games, three starts, in August with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. In his last 38 innings of the year, Rhee struck out 40, allowed 33 hits and walked only 10 batters.

After throwing in the upper-80s to low-90s for a majority of the season, Rhee added a little velocity over the last month which turned his 88-92 MPH fastball into a 90-94 MPH fastball. Rhee is also considered to have the best change-up in the system.

Some have projected Rhee as a middle of the rotation starter at the big league level and he will have a chance to show the new regime what he can do this spring ... Rhee received a non-roster invite to big league camp. As for the upcoming season, Oneri Fleita said during the convention Dae-Eun Rhee will begin the year in the Smokies' rotation.

#15 - Dan Vogelbach, 1B
It will be hard to miss 2011second round draft pick Dan Vogelbach at 6-foot, 250 pounds in training camp. After a protracted negotiation, the 19-year old left-handed hitter signed in time to play six games in the rookie league. Vogelbach hit .292 with a home run and six RBI, and then went on to have a solid performance in the Fall Instructional League.

Vogelbach comes with the scouting report of having plus-plus power, power to all fields, quick wrists, and good bat speed. In viewing footage of Vogelbach, he appears to have a fluid swing and good footwork around first base. However, his body did seem to have the "shakes", and he can use plenty of work in the off-season to improve his strength and conditioning. Vogelbach is considered to be a hard worker, and should be given credit for losing 40 pounds prior to the draft.

MLB.com listed Vogelbach as the tenth best first base prospect in the minor leagues. If he keeps himself in shape, the Northwest League record of 17 home runs set last year by Cubs' prospect Paul Hoilman may be in jeopardy.

#16 - Ben Wells, RHP
The Cubs selected Ben Wells in the seventh round of the 2010 draft and the 19-year old (September 10, 1992) had a decent first year in pro ball. Wells spent last season in Short-Season A-ball and posted a 4-4 record in 16 games, 15 starts, with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP with the Boise Hawks. Wells struck out 53 and walked 19 in 77 1/3 innings.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound right hander throws a heavy sinker in the low to mid 90s (velocity improved as the season progressed last year) and a hard slider that could end up being his out pitch. Wells repeats his delivery well and reportedly is very composed on the mound for a teenager.

Ben Wells should spend his second year as a professional in Peoria ... and how he handles a true full season of starts as one of the youngest players at that level will give the Cubs' brass a better idea of what the future may hold for the young righty.

#17 - Marco Hernandez, SS/2B
There seems to be some healthy debates as to where Marco Hernandez will be able to play on the diamond. However there seems to be no doubt that he will be able to produce offensively.

The 19-year old left-handed hitter was signed in 2010 to the Dominican Academy, and saw action with both the C-1 and C-2 teams. He hit .286 overall with 22 stolen bases, but .294 with the more powerful C-1 team. Hernandez lined up mostly at shortstop, where he fielded .946 with 14 errors.

Hernandez then spent the entire 2011 season in the Arizona Rookie League, where he battled teammate Gioskar Amaya as the team's offensive leader. Hernandez ended up hitting .333 while his 42 RBI were good for fourth in the league, despite hitting only two home runs. He also had a good on-base percentage of .375, coaxing 16 walks against 29 strikeouts.

Hernandez's sturdy 6-foot, 170 pound frame and hitting ability remind some of fellow Dominican Starlin Castro. However, his final position will be determined by his debated arm strength. Some scouts feel Hernandez has a good enough arm to remain at short, while close observers report that he'll need to move to the other side of the diamond. With a crowded middle infield situation in the lower minors, it's hard to determine where Hernandez will end up. Wherever he will be, Hernandez will probably keep hitting.

#18 - Chris Carpenter, RHP
Chris Carpenter is coming off a big year but one that unfortunately ended on the disabled list. Carpenter began 2011 in Triple-A, struggled, and was demoted to Double-A Tennessee to build his confidence ... and it worked.

Carpenter opened a lot of eyes the fall before in the AFL. The one-time starter turned into a flame throwing reliever but he had little to no command in Iowa. Once he regained his confidence in Double-A, he was soon added to the 40-man roster and made his big league debut.

The former third round pick of the Cubs (2008 draft) ended up showing what he was capable of in 10 relief appearances for the Cubs. Carpenter posted a 2.79 ERA in 9 2/3 innings but the hits (12) and walks allowed (seven) ran up his WHIP (1.97) to an alarming number for any pitcher, much less a reliever.

Carpenter pitched in the AFL for the second season in a row ... and pretty much dominated again. Carpenter posted a 1-1 record with a 3.29 ERA but walked only two batters to go along with 18 strikeouts. In 11 games (13 2/3 innings), Carpenter allowed 15 hits and finished with a 1.24 WHIP. Carpenter says he is healthy and ready to start Spring Training.

Chris Carpenter could begin the year in Dale Sveum's pen or end up back in Iowa. Most think his ceiling at the Major League level is that of a setup man, but with the ability to consistently sit in the upper 90s with his fastball and touch triple digits from time-to-time, Carpenter's future is a bright one ... if he can control it.

#19 - Chris Rusin, LHP
The Cubs selected Chris Rusin in the fourth round of the 2009 draft. The 25-year old southpaw (October 22, 1986) has put together two straight solid seasons and owns a 14-12 mark in 60 career games, 54 starts, with a 3.51 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in a short time.

Rusin has pitched at every level in the minors. In two stops in 2010 (Daytona and Tennessee), Rusin was 6-4 in 24 games, 21 starts, with a 3.11 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. Rusin struck out 99 batters with only 19 walks in 110 innings.

Last season, Rusin was a combined 8-4 in 26 games, 24 starts, with the Smokies and I-Cubs. Rusin's combined ERA was 3.96 with a 1.30 WHIP and in 138 2/3 innings he struck out 95 while issuing 30 walks ... slightly better than a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio. After receiving a promotion to Iowa, Rusin excelled at throwing strikes and posted a 5-2 record in 11 games, nine starts, with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in the hitter friendly Pacific Coast League. In 62 2/3 innings with the I-Cubs, Rusin struck out 46 and walked only 14 batters.

Chris Rusin received a non-roster invite to big league camp and if he picks up where he's left off the past two years, don't be surprised to see him throw his first pitch in the majors during the upcoming season.

#20 - Tony Zych, RHP
Tony Zych could end up being the first member of the Cubs' 2011 Draft Class (fourth round) to make his Major League debut. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander was good in limited action after signing with the Cubs. The Cubs actually drafted the Monee native three years earlier in the 46 round.

The polished 21-year old (August 7, 1990) was voted as the top prospect by scouts of the 2010 Cape Cod League. The former college reliever sits consistently in the mid to high 90s with his fastball and has touched 99 MPH. Zych's funky delivery gives him deception and adds life to his fastball.

Zych has a lot of development to do, especially with his slider ... a pitch that Zych throws in the low 80s but has a tendency to flatten out.

Zych appeared in four games in two stops last season (Rookie Ball in Arizona and Short-Season Boise) and posted a combined 2.25 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP (two hits, two walks and five strikeouts in four innings).

Tony Zych will likely start the year in Peoria but could make quick work of the minors on his way to the Show.

Here is a list of other players down on the farm to keep an eye on during the upcoming season: Gioskar Amaya (INF), Jeff Antigua (LHP), Jeffrey Baez (OF), Dallas Beeler (RHP), Justin Bour (1B), Zach Cates (RHP), Matt Cerda (INF), Pin-Cheih Chen (OF), Steve Clevenger (C), Zeke DeVoss (2B), Shawon Dunston, Jr. (OF), Taiwan Easterling (OF), Anthony Giansanti (INF/OF), Reggie Golden (OF), Jay Jackson (RHP), Eric Jokisch (LHP), Austin Kirk (LHP), Aaron Kurcz (RHP), Dillon Maples (RHP), Carlos Penalver (INF), Brooks Raley (LHP), Kevin Rhoderick (RHP), Rebel Ridling (1B/OF), Jose Rosario (RHP), Dave Sappelt (OF), Alexander Santana (RHP), Rock Shoulders (1B), Hayden Simpson (RHP), Nick Struck (RHP), Yao-Lin Wang (RHP), Logan Watkins (INF/OF) and Rob Whitenack (RHP)

Matt Garza is the only arbitration eligible player that remains unsigned for the upcoming season. Garza filed a $12.5 million figure and the Cubs countered with a $7.95 million salary for 2012 ... and the sides appear to have two days to work out a deal to avoid an arbitration hearing.

According to a report from Phil Rogers, Matt Garza's hearing is set for Friday. The Cubs are hopeful a deal can be reached before going in front of an independent arbiter. The Cubs and Garza can still find a middle ground but if the two sides go to arbitration Garza will make either $12.5 million or $7.95 million for the upcoming season.

Matt Garza earned $5.95 million last season.

The burglary happened between the afternoon of January 26 and late Tuesday morning.

Here's the update that includes the Cubs possible interest in signing Todd Coffey ...

Cubs' Facility in the Dominican Republic
The Cubs academy in the Dominican Republic is still 12 to 18 months away from completion but according to a report from the Tribune, the Ricketts family and key staff members will travel to the site of the new facility this week.

Tom Ricketts is holding a quarterly board meeting on the island.

The Cubs purchased the 50-acre area outside of Santo Domingo last year and Louie Eljauna, special assistant to Jed Hoyer, is designing the complex that will include baseball diamonds, indoor workout space, dormitories and offices. Eljauna has overseen such projects for the Red Sox and Pirates.

Jose Serra and Carmelo Martinez will use the facility as their base.

Backups
According to a report from Bruce Levine, the Cubs are looking for a utility infielder and a backup catcher. Levine mentioned as much during his Saturday show (Talkin' Baseball, ESPN 1000).

The Cubs' needs center around a utility middle infielder and a backup catcher with big league experience. Alfredo Amezaga can play three infield spots and all three positions in the outfield. According to Levine, Amezaga could be a solid backup to Starlin Castro and Darwin Barney.

Of the other non-roster invitees, Edgar Gonzalez could fill the need as well. The former Padre can play all four infield positions as well as left and right field. Matt Tolbert and Bobby Scales will also compete for the spot in Spring Training.

As for the backup catcher's role, the Cubs have to decide if they want to have Welington Castillo or Steve Clevenger backing up Geovany Soto instead of playing regularly in the minors. Jason Jaramillo will be in camp and could step into the role previously held by Koyie Hill.

The Cubs 40-man roster is currently full so any additions to the big league roster would require creating a spot. Right now, the Cubs will have 61 players in big league camp when the first full squad workout begins on February 24.

Jim Hendry
Jim Hendry is no longer unemployed. The Yankees have hired the Cubs' former GM to be a special assistant to general manager Brian Cashman.

Hendry will officially be a 'special assignment scout' and his duties will include Major League coverage, work within the minor league system grading the players and assisting with the draft.

Chattin' with Bruce Levine
Mr. Talkin' Baseball held his weekly chat on ESPNChicago.com, here are the highlights:

Levine does not expect Alfonso Soriano to be a part-time player for any team, including the Cubs. According to Levine, he will either be in the field or someone has written him a check to give him his outright release. Levine thinks Soriano should be attractive to another team.

The Cubs could wait to try to move Alfonso Soriano during the season or before the deadline in July. The problem with waiting is if Soriano has a poor three or four months the Cubs might not ever be able to move him.

Levine has not heard that Jorge Soler has established residency in the Dominican Republic (consistent with other reports). Soler must establish residency in the Dominican before he can apply to be a Major League free agent.

It is highly unlikely that the Cubs will have to give up a big prospect as compensation for Theo Epstein. According to Levine's sources he does not understand where the information is coming from that Boston will receive a highly rated prospect for Epstein. Levine reiterated a lower level prospect and money should be the proper compensation for Theo Epstein.

Major League catchers are hard to find and if the Cubs trade Geovany Soto they would have to get quality back. Soto is not perfect but having a rookie catcher (Welington Castillo or Steve Clevenger) is a very precarious position to be put in.

The Cubs are counting on John Gaub to vie for a spot in the pen this spring. The signing of Trever Miller is not a precursor to a trade ... Miller is another security blanket for the staff.

The Cubs are concentrating on signing Yoenis Cespedes and/or Jorge Soler ... but Soler might fit into the Cubs' plans better than Cespedes.

Levine's theory on Matt Garza is that if they cannot sign him to a long-term contract then they will trade him before the July 31 trade deadline. A long-term deal for Garza could be in the five-year, $60 million range.

For now, the Cubs backup first baseman is Jeff Baker.

Most scouts Levine has spoken to believe Ian Stewart could be the biggest surprise for the Cubs this season. The scouts he's talked to think if Stewart is 100 percent healthy he will get his confidence and swing back.

Todd Coffey
According to a report from Hardball Talk (NBC Sports) that cited Darren Wolfson of 1500ESPN.com in Minnesota as the source, the Cubs and A's are interested in signing Todd Coffey. The report did not indicate if a possible deal would be a major or minor league contract ... but without a spot on the 40-man roster, if the Cubs were to sign Coffey it would figure to be a minor league deal.

The veteran reliever posted a 5-1 record in 69 games for the Nationals last season with a 3.62 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. The 31-year old right-hander has pitched for three different organizations (Reds, Brewers and Nationals) during his seven-year career (24-18 in 438 games, all in relief, with a 4.08 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP)

Todd Coffey's Page on Baseball-Reference

News, Notes and Rumors
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs had interest in signing Chad Qualls before the Phillies inked him to a deal.

According to Ken Rosenthal, Yoenis Cespedes will likely visit the Marlins in Miami within the next week. The Cubs are remain "deeply involved" in Cespedes. Tuesday night on MLB Roundtrip (MLB Network Radio/XM Radio), Cliff Floyd said he thinks Cespedes will sign with the Marlins ... especially after he sees Little Havana and South Beach.

The Cubs' plan to add a 75-foot LED board and bleacher patio is getting a green light, with some conditions, from the city's landmarks commission.

Theo Epstein and Brian Cashman are happy they can now do business together.

Well, there's the update ... and I'm sticking to it.

Along with the loud exit of starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano, the Cubs have quietly amassed a stable of valuable pitchers. No, the Cubs haven't gone out and gotten the most talented and most capable of starting pitchers. However, relative to the contracts that the team is paying their starting pitchers, their value exceeds their marketability.

After Carlos Zambrano left the team, many thought Matt Garza would be the next one out. Garza has since remained as the team ace, raising the question as to what the Cubs plan to do with their Major League-ready talent.

Clearly, Garza and Ryan Dempster will remain with the team, at least for now, as will Paul Maholm, which leaves two spots to fight for between Randy Wells, Chris Volstad, Travis Wood, Andy Sonnanstine, and Rodrigo Lopez.

The easy deductions are Andy Sonnanstine and Rodrigo Lopez from the roster, especially Lopez, since he doesn't need to be put on the 40-man roster with signing only minor league deal that includes a non-roster Spring Training invite, essentially leaving Wells, Volstad, and Wood.

Each of those three pitchers register in the 88-90 MPH range, it's safe to say that none of those pitchers would fit the mold of a power reliever, ala Kerry Wood. However, one of the more successful rotation-to-bullpen conversions wasn't in the power relief mold--Sean Marshall.

None of those pitchers share the same handedness that Marshall possesses, however one--Chris Volstad--could be a right-handed Sean Marshall.

The book on Chris Volstad has been pretty much established--a fallen top prospect that has seen trouble in recent years. Since a solid debut in 2008, Volstad has never seen his ERA fall below 4.50. In addition, Volstad hasn't ever put up a strong strike out rate in his career. Over the past three years, he has produced an average of 29 games started. However, he fails to pitch past the sixth inning.

Volstad offers a good variety of pitches, and his pitch selection counteracts the lefty advantage. In fact, all of three of his off-speed pitches--the change-up, slider, and curveball--offer exceptional swing and miss rates against left-handers.

Chris Volstad has also proven to be more productive earlier on in his pitch counts. Through pitches 1-25, his K/BB rate is 3.20 with a .292/.332/.404 slash line. In contrast, when he throws 51-75 pitches, his K/BB rate drops to 1.79 with a .331/.375/.614 slash line.

Out of all of the Cubs pitchers, Chris Volstad would be best suited to make a successful transition to become a swing man out of the bullpen as a sixth starter, and possibly become a decent set-up man in the Sean Marshall mold.

Theo Epstein and Ben Cherington did not discuss the topic during a charity event Monday night at Fenway Park.

And, could Geovany Soto be on the Rays' radar?

Here's the update ...

Geovany Soto
A report by Marc Topkin in the Tampa Bay Times listed Geovany Soto as a possible option for the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays have one experienced catcher on their big league roster (Jose Molina) and might be looking to add a catcher with more Major League experience than either Robinson Chirinos or Jose Lobaton.

The report does not mention a conversation taking place with the Cubs and Rays about Geovany Soto ... but Topkin did report that the Rays could trade Jeff Niemann or Wade Davis to free up money to add a catcher. Niemann is arbitration eligible and is slated to make either $2.75 million or $3.2 million and Davis is on the books for $1.5 million for the upcoming season.

Geovany Soto avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $4.3 million contract for the 2012 season.

Yoenis Cespedes
Yoenis Cespedes is garnering a lot of attention from at least six big league teams and his agent, Adam Katz, labeled the market as "meaningful and aggressive." The Cubs are one of six teams believed to have the most interest in signing Cespedes. The other teams thought to be involved include the White Sox, Tigers, Marlins and Orioles.

Adam Katz said he is aware of the Spring Training dates and he is they are expecting Cespedes in camp with one of the teams.

According to a report from Jim Bowden, Yoenis Cespedes is expected to travel to the states in the next 7-10 days for face to face meetings with teams. Cespedes has established residency in the Dominican Republic and been declared a free agent by MLB. Cespedes must obtain a visitor's visa to travel to the United States.

According to a report from Baseball America, Cespedes has not acquired an OFAC unblocking license and until he does he cannot sign with a team.

News and Notes
According to a report from Tim Sheridan, several players as well as Dale Sveum and Dave McKay were at Fitch Park on Monday getting their work in. Zeke DeVoss, Matt Cerda, Tony Campana, Dustin Geiger, Justin Bour and James Adduci were among the players on the field Monday. Dave Sappelt said Saturday afternoon on MLB Network Radio (XM Radio) that he will be at Fitch starting Sunday.

According to a report from the Sun-Times, the Cubs have changed their plans to reduce the per-diem pay for area scouts. Reportedly, the Cubs had decided to reduce scouts meal money to $30 per day but according to the Sun-Times, they have decided to leave the compensation at $50 per day.

The Leones de Escogido leads Aguilas Cibaenas 4-3 in their best of nine series. The Lions were up three games to one, and ahead 5-4 going into the top of the ninth on Thursday. However, the Eagles scored four runs to steal an 8-5 victory. Cibaenas then came back on Friday to even the series by defeating Escogido 2-1. Saturday's game saw the Lions roar back from a 2-0 deficit to win 5-2. Game eight is set for Sunday, with a Game nine on Monday if necessary.

Mexican Pacific League

Yaquis de Obregon
Obregon started the week up 1-0 in their best of four series with Guasave. The Yaquis found themselves ahead again 1-0 on Sunday, however things quickly unraveled. Obergon was down 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth, thanks in part to an earned run given up in relief by Tennessee right-hander Oswaldo Martinez. But the Tribe rallied back and took home a 6-5 victory to improve to 2-0 in the series. Alfredo Amezaga was 0-for-2 with a walk.

The series resumed on Tuesday with another tight battle early on. Alfredo Amezaga singled and scored the first run as part of a 3-for-5 evening. Amezaga had two doubles and an RBI, and scored a total of three runs as Obregon held off a seventh inning surge by the Cotton Growers to defeat Guasave 6-4. Oswaldo Martinez had a strikeout in a scoreless inning of relief.

Needing one more win to earn a return trip to the Caribbean World Series, Obregon was not to be denied. Alfredo Amezaga led off the scoring on Wednesday by cracking his first home run of the playoffs, igniting a five-run first inning. The Yaquis then brought in the hammer as starter Marco Carrillo hurled six shutout innings, striking out six batters. Oswaldo Martinez chipped in a scoreless inning as Guasave had no answers for the Tribe's attack, giving up 25 hits in a 19-0 whitewash. Alfredo Amezaga ended up 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored while Marco Carrillo earned his second victory of the playoffs.

In a surprise move, manager Dave Miley decided to start Iowa reliever Kyle Smit on Tuesday with Mayaguez up 4-2 in their best of nine series with Caugas. Smit held the Creoles scoreless for three innings, and then started to implode as he couldn't record an out in the fourth inning. Smit ended up being charged with three earned runs as the Indians fell to Caugas 6-5 in eleven innings.
However, Mayaguez bounced back on Wednesday with a 5-2 win to secure a place in the Caribbean World Series.

The Tigres de Aragua currently leads their best of seven series with the Tiburones de La Guaira 3 games to 2. The Sharks actually led the series 2-0, but the Tigers rallied back on the timely hitting of veteran free agents Jorge Cortes, Adonis Garcia, and Jose Martinez as well as former Met and Giant Edgardo Alfonzo. Game six is set for Sunday, with a Game seven on Monday if necessary.

The Perth Heat have taken a 2-1 lead over the Melbourne Aces in their best of seven series. The winner of this series will have a second round bye, while the loser plays the winner of the other first round opponents, the Adelaide Bite and the Sydney Blue Sox. That series is tied 1-1, as storms postponed Game three on Saturday.

Attention CCO Readers
The Down on the Farm reader's poll continues. Please post the names of the minor league players you would like the Down on the Farm Report to follow next season. The CCO will track the progress of ten players throughout the entire season. A representative sample of positions and levels of play is optimal. You can name as many players as you like, but remember, only ten will be chosen to be followed.
