Cubs add C Rene Rivera to 25-man Roster … Activate RHP Koji Uehara from DL … Option C/1B Victor Caratini, LHP Rob Zastryzny to Triple-A Iowa
The Cubs announced four roster moves prior to the series finale with the Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon. C Rene Rivera was added to the active roster. Rivera started on Sunday, catching Kyle Hendricks. RHP Koji Uehara was activated from the 10-day disabled list. To make room on the active roster for Rivera and Uehara, C/1B Victor Caratini and LHP Rob Zastryzny were optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
Rene Rivera, 34, was claimed off waivers Saturday from the Mets. Rivera has played all or part of nine Major League seasons with the Seattle Mariners (2004-06), Minnesota Twins (2011), San Diego Padres (2013-14), Tampa Bay Rays (2015) and New York Mets (2016-17) and is a career .215/.266/.340 hitter (274-for-1,272) with 53 doubles, 34 homers and 141 RBI in 453 games. With the Mets this season, he is batting .230/.278/.391 (40-for-174) with four doubles, eight home runs and 23 RBI in 54 games. Versus lefties, the right-handed hitting Rivera has put together a .250/.268/.575 line this season with a .843 OPS.
Behind the plate, Rivera has thrown out 10-of-31 runners attempting to steal this season, a 32.3 percent success rate, which would tie for third-best in the National League if he had enough games played to qualify. Rivera’s success rate this year mirrors his career totals, as he has thrown out 97-of-300 runners attempting to steal, 32.3 percent.
Koji Uehara, 42, is 3-4 with 13 holds, two saves, a 3.55 ERA (15 earned runs in 38 innings) and a 1.10 WHIP in 43 relief outings with the Cubs this season. Uehara was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Aug. 9 with a right neck strain and did not require a rehab assignment as part of his return.
Rob Zastryzny, 25, is 1-2 with one save and a 6.57 ERA (27 earned runs in 37 innings) in 12 appearances, five as a starter, with Iowa this season. Zastryzny made his big league debut with the Cubs last season, going 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA (two earned runs in 16 innings) and a 1.06 WHIP in eight appearances, one as a starter. Zastryzny struck out 17 batters in the 16 innings pitched while limiting opponents to a .207 batting average.
Victor Caratini, 24, is batting .268/.318/.415 (11-for-41) with three doubles, one home, two RBI and a .733 OPS in 17 games with the Cubs this season. With Iowa, Caratini is hitting .344/.387/.557 (94-for-273) with 24 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and a .944 OPS in 76 games.
