Cubs place INF/OF Ben Zobrist on 10-day DL … INF Tommy La Stella back up from Triple-A Iowa
The Cubs made two roster moves prior to Friday night’s opener at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Cubs placed INF/OF Ben Zobrist on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 13, with left wrist inflammation and recalled INF Tommy La Stella from Triple-A Iowa. La Stella started at third base in the first of three against the Pirates.
Tommy La Stella, 28, joins the Cubs for the third time this season. He is hitting .304 (7-for-23) with two doubles, one home run, two RBI and a .484 on-base percentage in 16 games with the big league team this season. With Iowa this year, La Stella has batted .213/.265/.266 (20-for-94) with two doubles, a homer and four RBI in 26 games.
La Stella was on the Cubs’ Opening Day roster and was optioned to Iowa on April 21. He returned to the big leagues on May 7 and returned to Iowa on May 19.
Ben Zobrist, 36, is batting .223/.321/.394 (42-for-188) with seven doubles, two triples, seven homers, a .715 OPS and 21 RBI in 54 games with the Cubs this season.
Zobrist said his wrist has been bothering him for a couple of weeks and it has not shown much improvement. Zobrist thought it was better for the team to shut it down for at least the 10 days and not have to play a man short.
Zobrist is not anticipating being on the disabled list longer the required minimum.
