Cubs re-sign LHP Gerardo Concepcion, LHP Zac Rosscup and RHP Conor Mullee to Minor League contracts
According to Baseball America, the Cubs have re-signed three pitchers to minor league deals that the team non-tendered on Dec. 2. LHP Gerardo Concepcion, LHP Zac Rosscup and RHP Conor Mullee elected for free agency but all three pitchers have returned to the organization on minor league contracts.
LHP Gerardo Concepcion, 24, started the season with Double-A Tennessee. After 10 games and posting a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and 0.50 WHIP, the Cubs bumped Concepcion up to Triple-A Iowa. Concepcion picked up with the I-Cubs where he left off with the Smokies and was soon promoted to the big leagues.
Concepcion struggled in the majors with his command. Concepcion pitched in three games, completing 2 1/3 innings, and allowed one run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts (3.86 ERA, 1.28 WHIP). Concepcion allowed four of five inherited runners to score and was soon shipped down with goals to accomplish back at Iowa.
Concepcion did not pitch well once he returned to the minors. Concepcion appeared in 32 games total for Triple-A Iowa and was 2-4 with a 7.29 ERA and 1.92 WHIP. In 42 innings, the lefty allowed 36 runs, 34 earned, on 57 hits with 24 walks and 35 strikeouts.
Concepcion had two different seasons in one and took several steps back after he was sent back down to work on things.
Gerardo Concepcion should be in big league camp this spring and will have a lot to prove to Joe Maddon and the coaching staff.
LHP Zac Rosscup, 28, lost this past season with a shoulder injury and last pitched in the big leagues on Sept. 23, 2015. Rosscup missed a majority of the 2015 season with multiple injuries. He’s shown flashes of very good stuff and the ability to get batters out at the highest level.
Rosscup was 2-1 with a 4.39 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 4.86 FIP in 33 appearances during the 2015 season. Over three years with the Cubs, Rosscup is 3-1 in 61 games with a 5.40 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 4.96 FIP.
Zac Rosscup should also be on the list of non-roster invitees when it is released over the next month.
RHP Conor Mullee, 28, made his big league debut this past season with the Yankees. The Cubs claimed him off waivers on Nov. 2 from the Yankees and he was non-tendered a month later.
Mullee appeared in three games, all in relief, for Joe Girardi and allowed one run on no hits with four walks and four strikeouts in three innings (3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP).
Mullee pitched with Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year. In 26 combined games, all in relief, Mullee was 4-0 with a 1.19 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. He allowed six runs, five earned, on 23 hits with 11 walks and 47 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings.
