From the Wire: Cubs Designate Ryan Kalish for Assignment, RHP Jacob Turner added to 40-Man Roster

The Cubs designated OF Ryan Kalish for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for RHP Jacob Turner. When Kalish was removed from Iowa’s game Thursday night and replaced with Brett Jackson it was obvious he was involved to some degree in the acquisition of Jacob Turner.

Ryan Kalish made the Cubs roster out of Spring Training but in 39 games, Kalish hit only .242/.303/.330 with two doubles and three triples for a .633 OPS. Kalish was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on May 26.

Kalish did not hit with Iowa while receiving regular playing time. In 67 games, Kalish managed a .219/.306/.367 line with 11 doubles, three triples and five home runs.

PrintWith the two roster moves, the Cubs 40-man roster officially stands at 40 players.

The Cubs have not addressed Jacob Turner’s immediate future with the team and if he will be added to the 25-man roster or not.

Jacob Turner is out of minor league options. The Cubs will have to add him to the active 25-man roster or stash him on the disabled list until the roster expands on Sept. 1.

Man, my first reaction was bummer. But as I’ve said before and on another post today. I admit I was absolutely, positively dead wrong about Kalish. Couldn’t have been more wrong.

He may still have another shot in the tank. This was the first year in a while he was healthy and showed brief flashes. I’m not giving up on him totally. But I will never advocate for him again.

Hope me eating this crow helps Bryan forgive me for my proclamations. He has never moved past that one and loves to throw it in my face anytime I get too overzealous.

I also liked Kalish, wish him the best of luck!

Doesn’t he have to be added to the 25 man? Thought he was out of options….

Yes, Turner has to be added to the 25-man. Epstein said the team would wait to add him to the active roster until he reports to Wrigley at some point this weekend.

Is it safe to say Turner is a good change of scenery candidate kind of guy? The kid’s still a kid. No?

    • Neil

Turner is younger than both of the Low-A pitchers the Cubs traded for him.
