Cubs Announce Dan Straily to Start Saturday’s Game in New York

Shortly after the last out of Thursday’s finale with the Brewers, the Cubs announced RHP Dan Straily would make his Cubs’ debut at Citi Field on Saturday afternoon. The Cubs are pushing the other four starters back a day and inserting Straily into the rotation. Travis Wood is scheduled to start the opener against the Mets.

The Cubs are in the middle of a stretch of 33 games in 34 days and 21 games in a row, with the next scheduled day off not until Aug. 25. The team will announce the corresponding roster move in order to activate Dan Straily prior to Saturday night’s game.

Travis Wood is scheduled for the opener against the Mets. With Dan Straily pitching Saturday, Jake Arrieta (Sunday) and Kyle Hendricks (Monday) would start the last two games at Citi Field. Tsuyoshi Wada (Tuesday) and Edwin Jackson (Wednesday) would start the first two games of the Giants series at Wrigley that begins on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

PrintWhen asked after the game if Edwin Jackson could lose starts to pitchers the Cubs want to see over the final six weeks of the season, Rick Renteria said “not necessarily” according to the Sun-Times.

The Cubs would reportedly like to have Dan Straily and Felix Doubront start a few games in September.

Dan Straily was acquired from Oakland along with Addison Russell, Billy McKinney and a PTBNL for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel on July 4. Straily was 10-8 in 27 starts last season for Oakland with a 3.96 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP and a 4.05 FIP. Straily struggled with the A’s and Triple-A Sacramento before he was included in the package for Samardzija and Hammel.

In seven starts with Iowa, Dan Straily is 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Straily has allowed 20 runs, 13 earned, on 37 hits with 13 walks and 40 strikeouts. Straily has been very good over his last three starts and he recently credited his improvement to the work he’s put in with Iowa’s pitching coach Bruce Walton and better command of his fastball. Over his last two starts, Straily has been charged with two unearned runs on eight hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts in 13 innings.
