From the Wire: Cubs Acquire Addison Russell, Billy McKinney, Dan Straily and PTBNL from A’s for Samardzija and Hammel

The Cubs announced the blockbuster trade Saturday morning that sent Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Oakland Athletics for INF Addison Russell, OF Billy McKinney, RHP Dan Straily and a PTBNL.

With the subtractions of Samardzija and Hammel and the addition of RHP Dan Straily, the Cubs 40-man roster stands at 39 players. The Cubs active roster (25-man) currently stands at 23 players.

The Cubs have not announced which two pitchers will fill the two spots on the active 25-man roster that were vacated by the trade. Carlos Villanueva has been announced as the starter for Saturday’s game against the Nationals and several reports have indicated LHP Chris Rusin will be recalled to piggyback Villanueva for Saturday’s game.

PrintThe Cubs have assigned RHP Dan Straily to Triple-A Iowa and OF Billy McKinney has been assigned to High-A Daytona. The Cubs have not announced which affiliate Addison Russell will report to, but he was playing at the Double-A level at the time of the trade.

Update 11:57am CDT: The Cubs have announced INF Addison Russell will report to Double-A Tennessee. Russell could be in the lineup as soon as Sunday.

The Cubs are expected to call-up LHP Tsuyoshi Wada to start one of the two games in Cincinnati on Tuesday. RHP Dallas Beeler and RHP Dan Straily are on the 40-man roster, along with Wada, and would not require a 40-man roster move.

Hendricks has to be added to the 40 man roster this off-season, so it is no big deal adding him now. But the 40 man roster is going to be some tough calls. For that reason, don’t expect guys like Bryant or Baez to be called up this year.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

You’re correct on Hendricks. He has to be added this winter. Neither Baez nor Bryant have to.

  • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

I would like to see Hendricks up. I think he’s the best of the bunch and his numbers have been similar at every level and translate to the next. I think he can be a 3.50 guy in Chicago at least.

Would like to see Russell go to Iowa an start banging with the boys. Put Baez at 2nd, if there are no expectations for Valaika. But dang he’s so young! That’s whats crazy about Russell. He’s Mike Trout, Starkin Castro young when he projects to be up. That’s why I want to keep him. I just feel he has fewer question marks than Baez. Really I think if prefer to keep them all. Sign Lester and one other pitcher in FA and see who else develops from within. Weve got so much young pitching now I believe a few will turn out to be special. Who knows, maybe Stinett could be a contributor within a year or so. But don’t trade any of our top prospects including Russell! Figure out other routes to get pitching. Our FO is so creative and they will figure out a way toget it done.

Just updated … Russell has officially been assigned to Double-A Tennessee. Could be in the lineup as soon as Sunday.

  • Tony_H

    Theo states positions
    Baez SS, 2B, 3B
    Bryant 3B, RF
    Alcantara 2B, SS, OF
    Russell SS, 3B, 2B

Since he didn’t mention Castro moving, that makes it look like this.

    1B Rizzo
    2B Russell
    SS Castro
    3B Baez
    OF Alcantara
    RF Bryant

Also stated Almora stays in CF and Mckinney will play LF or RF for Daytona.

    • J Daniel

Kyle Schwarber might be your LFer … the way he is mashing already. There is a lot of power in that group as well. Don’t believe they will move Russell in a deal.

That group you have looks good, is young, and can hit.

      • Tony_H

        Or Almora in CF.

        • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

DH could be in the NL soon. In which case Schwarber takes that role. Good problems to have.

        • J Daniel

Almora is still 2 years away, Alcantara is ready now.

          • Tony_H

Yes, but Alcantara would move to LF at that point (most likely). Or to infield if something happened. Lots of flexibility.

          • J Daniel

Who knows what will happen by then but he could turn into the super sub like DeRosa.

    • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

Almora, McKinney, Schwarber and Soler are guys that you’d have to consider in the future. I’ve gotten more and more to where I believe Soler is going to be a bigtime player. It’s a hunch more than anything but even with all his injuries, as soon as he returns he picks up right where he left off. He seems to be a natural.

On another note. Our Big 4, that recently became a Big 5 when we realized Alcantra belonged in that group, then Big 6 when Schwarber came along. Is now a BIG 7! And a absolutely legit Big 7. Russell absolutely belongs in that group and so does each of the others. All may not pa out but we have 7 prospects with absolute stud potential. Some may not make it but it’s so nice to not be relying on 1 or 2.

      • triple

And remember, we already have Castro and Rizzo proving they are the real deal in the majors already! So 9 guys to play in 7 positions, since none really project to be a full-time catcher. However, with this many guys with that much potential, maybe if Schwarber does show the ability to improve at the catcher position, maybe they don’t have to try to rush him to the big leagues and can afford to spend an extra year developing him into a solid catcher?

Epstein building offensive juggernaut … http://www.nbcsports.com/joe-posnanski/epsteins-building-offensive-juggernaut

    Have to love it!

And this is before the trade and the addition of Russell!

    • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

Love that article! Instead of wearing out my keyboard explaining why things are the way they are I can just point to that. It makes a ton of sense and is really exciting.

  • J Daniel

Trade may help the A’s win it this year, who knows? Time will tell. But it was the type of deal that JH continued to be lambasted about.

Would we still trade Joe Carter for Sut knowing what the outcome was? Boy that was magical and the only thing missing from it was a Series. Carter ends up being HOF. Maybe had they kept Carter, Rafy, and couple others they would have been better?

Again, time will tell but this years draft may have been critical. The deletion of Smarj and Hammell will probably mean a bad rest of the year, a lot of losses, and another really high pick next year. IMO it is exactly what they need at this point and I believe will be the last summer of selling off in awhile.

Tex has been conspicuously absent from this discussion on any related thread. I’d like to get his take. I’ll assume he’s none to pleased as I know he wants to improve now and is strongly in the camp that says we need pitching and only pitching at this point. But he also loves quality and I don’t think there’s a better prospect outside of Buxton, Taveras or Bradley that we could have gotten back. And Russell may end up as good as any of them. Buxton is the only one that is as young.

    Tex, what say you?

    • John_CC

Why? Its kind of nice around here! Kidding…

I was thinking that he is conspicuously quite because its hard to complain about what is happening here now that it is becoming more and more apparent that we are getting close and that the stockpile of talent is too much to ignore anymore.

That’s what I was thinking. I’m giving him the benefit of doubt.

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

Russell “may”…that is the concern. I feel like their return, while supposedly higher quality over quantity (when compared to Garza trade) is much much riskier. If Russell is a bust, you traded Samardzija for Straily pretty much straight up.

Just feels like we took our 2 best trade chips and decided to throw all our eggs in one basket with this return. Hopefully it pans out good.

      • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

Very true. But I think that is why they got Russell. He’s as close to a “can’t miss,” prospect as you get. Every talent evaluator out there says he’s a future perennial all-star. And the biggest kudo? He’s got the blessing of both Billy Beane and Theo Epstein. Probably the two men acknowledged for an eye for talent at their position. Friedman being the only guy close in accomplishment with prospects. If Theo and Beane say the guy is a stud, then you can pretty much take it to the bank that he’s a stud. I like the quality over quantity in this case. Top 5 or 10 prospects that have reached AA typically turn out pretty well.

      • Tony_H

Too bad they didn’t shop at the sure thing window…..

  • Tony_H

Len Kasper gets it very well.

    Len Kasper ‏@LenKasper 8m

Cubs got best 3 months of Hammel’s career & sold very very high on Samardzija who wasn’t gonna sign long-term deal. & the issue is…what?

    • J Daniel

We have been saying that … He wasn’t going to sign … So a really good return in Russell alone. All the talk last week was,Russell was untouchable … Another example of how it only takes 1 that is going for it now to make a good trade. The A’s made a good deal as well and I suspect they will move Smarj next year.

    • DWalker

bingo. Hammel is due a regression, we got lucky selling high on him. Shark is interesting, I bet he wil be an absolute force of nature for the A’s. He only shows up for big games, and in the hunt for a title he is going to be able to treat every game as important. If that happens a lot of people will moan about it here about how good he is, but Shark had no intention of signing anything to stay here. He wants his FA paycheck and a contending team. And we ddin’t exactly chalk up a lot of wins with his start.

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

Carlos Villanueva and Chris Rusin to start after we trade SPs.
This really gets the deja vu going.

The FO could at least throw Wada and Hendricks out there for the replacement starts…at least it wouldn’t seem completely like Groundhog Day.

    • Denver Mike

I’m pretty sure that’s the idea, to use Wada/Beeler/Hendricks, but because things came together pretty rapidly none of them were prepared to start today, so we end up with Villanueva/Rusin for a start.
