Jake Arrieta (5-1, 1.81/1.01/1.96) vs. Jordan Zimmermann (6-4, 2.95/1.19/2.74)

The Cubs wrap-up the three game series as well as the season series with the Nationals this afternoon. The Cubs are 3-3 in the first six games against the Nationals this year and will look to bounce back from Saturday’s not-so-good performance.

Jake Arrieta is now the number one pitcher on the Cubs staff. And he has pitched like a number one for the last month. It will be interesting to see how Arrieta pitches this afternoon when his teammates could use an excellent start from him after the last two days.

Rick Renteria will have a short bullpen this afternoon, even with the addition of another reliever to the mix. The Cubs are expected to recall RHP Blake Parker from Triple-A Iowa prior to the game. But with Carlos Villanueva (58 pitches in two-plus innings), Chris Rusin (73 pitches in 3 2/3 innings) and Justin Grimm (43 pitches in one inning) laboring through Saturday’s bullpen day, those three pitchers will not be available. The Cubs are expected to make several changes to the pitching staff prior to Monday’s opener in Cincinnati as the team tries to make it to the break before hitting the reset button on several pitching assignments.

2014AllStarSelectionShowThe Cubs will find out which player or players will represent the team at the Midsummer Classic on July 15 at Target Field tonight. The All-Star Selection Show will be aired on ESPN beginning at 6:00pm CDT. Anthony Rizzo and/or Starlin Castro should be named All-Stars tonight.

The final game of the year against the Nationals all starts with Jake Arrieta …

Jake Arrieta is coming off the best month of his career and has taken no-hitters into at least the seventh inning in each of his last two starts. Arrieta no-hit the Red Sox for 7 2/3 innings in his last outing and surrendered just one hit. Arrieta has allowed a grand total of two runs on four hits in his last two games (14 2/3 innings) with one walk and 19 strikeouts.

Jake Arrieta was 4-0 in six June starts with a 0.92 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP. Over his last 39 1/3 innings, Arrieta has given up 21 hits with six walks and 48 strikeouts. One the road this year, Arrieta is 4-1 in seven starts with a 2.16 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. Arrieta faces a team he is very familiar with due to his time in Baltimore and one that he has not beaten in his career.

PrintJake Arrieta is 0-1 in five career starts against the Nationals with a 6.84 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. This afternoon is Arrieta’s second start at Nationals Park. Arrieta received a no-decision after allowing one run on six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Nationals Career Numbers against Jake Arrieta

The Cubs will get their first look of the season at Jordan Zimmermann. The pitcher many consider the best on the Nationals staff is having a good year. Zimmermann is coming off a win against the Rockies in which he allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in six innings. Zimmermann has not completed seven innings in either of his last two starts. For the month of June, Zimmermann was 3-2 in six starts with a 1.43 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP … 30 hits allowed with six walks and 41 strikeouts in 44 innings.

Jordan Zimmermann is 3-2 in 10 home starts this season with a 3.23 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP, and he faces the Cubs for the seventh time in his career this afternoon.

Zimmermann is 1-4 in six career starts against the Cubs with a 5.59 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.

The Yankees have designated Alfonso Soriano for assignment.

I ask everyone to please be respectful of the other when discussing this news.

    • Jeffrey Rogers

Never understood the hatred of Sorisno. He played everyday, produced a ton of runs, carried the Cubs offense for long stretches and always took youg guys under his wing.

      • Jeffrey Rogers

If his career is over , he would be a great candidate for working with the young Latin players in spring training, at the DR baseball academy and roving instructor in the minors.

        • DWalker

I could see that. He seemed really happy to mentor younger players and was probably one of the most stable and level headed guys you’ll find.

      • GaryLeeT

I remember some untimely DL stints.

      • Denver Mike

I don’t think there has been any direct “hatred” for Soriano, not around the CCO anyways. The topic of how well he performed and if trading him was the right thing to do? Now that has been known to get the proverbial “panties in a bunch” very quickly!

        • Jeffrey Rogers

You have obviously never heard the hatred yelled from the LF bleachers when he was there.

          • Denver Mike

Oh trust me, I’ve heard plenty of nonsense hurled from the LF bleachers, and I myself at a time heckled likes of Carlos Lee and others. I can agree on that, it’s seem like it’s been so long since I’ve been to Wrigley I guess I forget that most fans aren’t as educated as those that visit here.

          • Jeffrey Rogers

Yes and Soriano took it all without saying a word. Something that Milton Bradley could have taken a lesson on. He had other issues though….obviously.

    • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

I was totally shocked to see that news. Hopefully that’s not the way his illustrious career ends. Crazy to think that less than a year ago he was playing pretty well and they were willing to give up a promising asset in a trade. I gues I wasn’t paying attention but I didn’t realize he was playing so poorly.

Very bummed for Alfonso. A guy that plays the game with a smie on his face and was decent to teammates, opponents, media and fans. Just generally a good guy. Deserves better but such is life.

      • Jeffrey Rogers

He was better than “pretty well”. He had 30+ Hr and 100 RBI.

      • triple

Spoken very nicely Board… Yeah, his stats haven’t even been up to par with the Cubs dismal outfield that we are putting out there this year. It’s a shame to see him get that low, but since the steroid era has ended (and in no way am I pointing a finger at Soriano,) this has once again become a young man’s game.

On another note, as the Yankees have dropped down to .500, they look to me like an organization that is in shambles, wheel falling of the wagon while going downhill, and somehow picking up speed, as that’s Derek Jeter who’s getting off at the next stop.

      • John_CC

+1 Rider. I never hated Soriano, like all highly paid super stars he played under a different level of scrutiny. And as a fan its easier to jump on him, and I did.

But he a huge smile, loved baseball, and worked hard day in day out, through pain and injuries.

I can’t believe the freaking Skanks DFA’d him!

    • paulcatanese

Good man, hope he has a good retirement.

    • Steve Baier

Here’s hoping he can maybe help another team in the second half, maybe he has one of those hot streaks left.

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

Not just one of those deals where he passes waivers and then stays on the team?

    • Tony D

I would not mind him coming back to the cubs! Soriano was and will always be a player that I have the up most respect for!

      • JasonOfTheBurbs

we are technically paying for him anyway…might as well!

    • SirGladiator

Does this mean that if we claim him, we’d sort of be getting him for free the rest of the year, since we’re already paying his salary anyway? If it does, then wouldn’t we be 100% insane ‘not’ to pick him up, since there must be ‘somebody’ (probably many somebodies) that we could easily cut and save the money we’d otherwise spend on that player? Not only would it save money, but as others have mentioned we’d also have a golden chance to keep him in the organization going forward, as a coach at some level. Sounds like a win-win to me!

      • VBCubs

Hell, I wouldn’t mind bringing him back for the last couple months if we aren’t going to bring Baez up. That and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ruggiano traded in the next couple weeks, and he could replace his at bats against the lefties at least.

A dominant Arietta today would really hit the spot for the Cubs.

        Sigh…ho hum.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Ruggiano misplayed Span’s fly ball into a double

  • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

Despite the early run, Arietta appears to be throwing sharp cheddar…

    • Craig York

Looks good. I guess he’s aloud to allow a hit every now and then.

  • DWalker

been wondering, where is the shark media blowup about how horribly he was treated by the cubs and how they are just a bunch of whiny losers? Seems like we are due for it any time now.

    • paulcatanese

Don’t think so, heard his interview yesterday. Didn’t praise the Cubs, but didn’t bad mouth them either. Expressed how hard it was playing with
a team that one doesn’t know who is going to be there day to day, but that was about it. He did say how excited he was to be with a team that has a chance to win day after day. Don’t see anything negative about that.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Sweeney did not hustle down the line. It was the right call, but still

    • RynoTiger

yup and Len just mentioned the tweets that he’s received about the lack of hustle. also he wasn’t even watching the playing so he had no idea that if he hustled and tried to avoid the tag he could have possibly been safe.

perhaps DFA Sweeney and see if Soriano wants to return to do a Manny thing of play and coach/mentor. Perhaps he could help Junior Lake.

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

I have zero patience with lack of effort. Can’t control the results but can control how you play the game.

      • John_CC

Junior is eerily similar to the bad Soriano, I don’t think he needs any coaching from him.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Ruggiano with his 10th hit in four games

  • Sonate

Rizzo seems lost at the plate today.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

      Last 2 days

      • GaryLeeT

Hitting just over .200, no HRs or even an RBI in his last 11 games. I am sure it is just one of those little dips all players have.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Good job by Arrieta

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Very good outing for Arrieta today.

  • Sonate

I know you want to avoid the DP, but giving up an out to do so, particularly when you’re on the road, is a poor investment. Now we have only eight outs to work with.

    • RynoTiger

Ricky could have also been thinking: “well my team hasn’t scored a run in the last 15 innings. the Nats bullpen has been really good this season. we’ve got the lead-off man on with the top of the batting order and our main run producers coming up. we can’t win if we don’t tie the game first and this could be our final chance to tie before the 9th.”

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Good baserunning by Coghlan

  • Jeffrey Rogers

Why is John Baker getting so many AB’s

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Castillo did not make as many rehab starts with Iowa as they would have liked. Whiteside had to cleared off the 40-man for Wada or they would have lost him and Castillo was activated before he was really ready to play everyday. Cubs have been trying to work him back in while making sure he does not end up on the DL again.
