MLB Pipeline Updated Cubs Top 20 Prospect List

MLB Pipeline posted updates to each team’s top 20 prospect list Sunday night and the Cubs’ updated list includes the recently drafted OF/C Kyle Schwarber and reflects the performances turned in this season.

Kris Bryant tops the list of the prospects in the Cubs system followed by Javier Baez, Addison Russell, Arismendy Alcantara and Albert Almora. Kyle Schwarber checked in at No. 8 followed by Billy McKinney.

The top six prospects in the Cubs system are position players and eight of the top 20 are pitchers with RHP Jefferson Mejia cracking the top 20.

Four of the young arms in the system that were previously ranked by MLB Pipeline did not make the updated list that was released Sunday night … RHP Duane Underwood, RHP Tyler Skulina, LHP Rob Zastryzny and RHP Dillon Maples.

PrintDuane Underwood is having a good season with Kane County. Underwood is 5-2 in 16 games, 15 starts, with a 2.44 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. In 73 2/3 innings this season, Underwood has given up 63 hits with 26 walks and 58 strikeouts. Over his last four starts, Underwood is 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP. Underwood has surrendered 14 hits with three walks and 24 strikeouts in his last 23 innings.

Tyler Skulina is 4-7 in 18 starts with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Skulina has allowed 36 runs, 32 earned, on 71 hits with 35 walks and 68 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings. Skulina is 0-4 in his last five starts with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Skulina was very good his last time out and allowed one run on three hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings.

Daniel Vogelbach is more than a HR hitter, even though he leads the Daytona Cubs with 12. This year for Daytona, he is 1st in doubles, 1st in RBIs, 1st in TBs, 1st in SLG, 1st in OPS, 2nd in hits, 2nd in runs and his fielding % average is above .990. He currently has the stats that Soler, Baez, and Geiger were promoted on last year.

When I read that list, I couldn’t help but think about how many other teams would commit murder for that Top 20.

    • GaryLeeT

There were murders committed for that list. Many a Cubs’ season suffered inhumane, and horrible deaths.

Soler at #6? I would have him at #2 or #3.

    • VBCubs

      I’d say in between 3 and 5.

When a guy like Soler is your #6… I think you’re doing pretty well…

It remains to be seen how these guys pan out, but I have never in my 36 years of being a Cubs fan seen this kind of talent in the Cubs pipeline.
