Cubs Reportedly in Serious Talks with A’s on a Deal for Jeff Samardzija and/or Jason Hammel

According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are in serious talks with the Athletics on a big trade that could send Jeff Samardzija and/or Jason Hammel to Oakland.

The discussion between the Cubs and A’s is believed to include Addison Russell. Rosenthal pointed out that the A’s top prospect is not in Double-A Midland’s lineup.

Update 8:38pm CDTSusan Slusser has confirmed the Cubs and A’s are discussing a deal that would send Jeff Samardzija and/or Jason Hammel to Oakland. Addison Russell is in play in the discussions.

Jim Bowden reported Friday morning that Billy Beane was looking to add at least one starting pitcher and a second baseman. Billy Beane was willing to include any player in his system not named Addison Russell. The A’s have been rumored to have interest in Jason Hammel and Jeff Samardzija for quite some time.

PrintAddison Russell is considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball. Baseball Prospectus ranked Russell as the seventh best prospect in the game prior to the season and Baseball America had Russell as No. 14 on its list.

Russell is hitting .333/.439/.500 in 13 games for Double-A Midland after missing time with awith a severe hamstring injury early in the season. Russell has three doubles, a triple and a home run in 57 plate appearances.

Where would Russell fit in as far as a future position with Cubs?

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

It would be a good problem to have.

      • Jeffrey Rogers

        Yes

      • TheWrongGuy

Good to see they are talking with the A’s.
I can see these talks lasting awhile. A flip to the Jay’s of Russel could help add a better return. Jose Reyes can’t play everyday as he gets injured too much. And second an easy adjustment for most players from SS.

        • TheWrongGuy

To add the A’s will also have a lottery pick coming for next years draft as well. I can see this being in the mix also.

          • RynoTiger

I see the A’s may need help at 2B. So perhaps throw Barney/Valbuena into the mix to help trade a little. Perhaps add some international signing money if the A’s need some.

          • TheWrongGuy

            agree’d.
The Cubbies have plenty of international slot money to trade.

          • RynoTiger

the A’s also just agreed to a new 10 yr lease for the Oakland Coliseum..which is known to have plumbing problems..so perhaps send some plungers or send some of the construction crew that was going to work on Wrigley out to Oakland this winter to work on that plumbing

          • RynoTiger

or better yet..send the rooftop owners to the A’s.

          • TheWrongGuy

            HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

          • TheWrongGuy

I doubt any of those 2b are in play if A. Russell is being traded. The A’s will want a prospect in return as well. So I hate to say it but I would say A. Alcantara might be in play for this. Hoyer has said in the past that the Cubs may trade a top prospect.

          • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Alcantara is playing center as I type this. If he was being discussed, he would not be playing right now.

          • TheWrongGuy

            touche’
            :)
            Thanks Neil!
            “2 thumbs way up”

          • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

You’re welcome. Lots of info floating around right now, with a lot of names and multiple teams, etc. Twitter is great, can be very difficult sometimes.

    • RynoTiger

      a couple of thoughts:
      1. Russell is flipped in another trade for pitching
      2. Russell stays at SS, Castro is moved to 3B, Baez to 2B, Bryant to OF, Olt to OF (if he learns to hit), Alcantra to CF

      • Jeffrey Rogers

I don’t see them moving Castro. Someone will get traded. IMO.

and let me just say I hope this trade is for Hammel and not Shark. That way we could still have one other big trade coming with Shark for more prospects.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Ken Rosenthal is reporting deal is done, Samardzija and Hammel to the A’s

    • Tony_H

Wow! A’s making a big move!

    • RynoTiger

just saw his tweet about other teams possibly being involved. the Cubs better get a very nice package back. question now..who starts tomorrow? wasn’t Shark pitching tomorrow?

    • Hackman23

Better be a lot coming back

    • Tony_H

Russell, McKinney, Straily and a PTBNL.

      • Tony_H

        From Minor league ball.

        1) Addison Russell, SS, Grade A: Looks like a complete player to me, perhaps not a guy who is going to hit .330 but who should produce power, speed, on-base percentage, and enough range and arm strength to remain at shortstop. Future long-term regular and All-Star candidate eventually.

        2) Billy McKinney, OF, Grade B: Borderline B+: Scouts love him despite average tools due to his excellent feel for hitting and overall instincts for the game. Opening 2014 in High-A, a big jump for a high school player, but the challenge worked for Russell.

        • Tony_H

This is the A’s #1 pick in 2013 and 2012.

      • RynoTiger

        not enough.

        • Tony_H

Why? Until you know the PTBNL, not sure how you can say.

          • Swish23

So we get an OF rated below Soler, Scwarber, and Almora plus if Alcantara or Bryant move to OF plus another RH SS who is below Baez and all star MLB Castro and another #4 starter for 2 guys with ERA below 3. 100 losses here we come. Gonna tank for 2 more years for sure now.

          • Tony_H

That is about as negative as you can spin this deal…..

          • Swish23

And full of facts. We have 2 SS rated better than Russell. At least 3 if not 5 OF rated better than McKinley. And
A MLB rotation and AAA rotation of #4 SP.
            Don’t shoot the messenger.

          • Tony_H

I think you are underselling Addison Russell. Just because Baez was ranked above him, doesn’t mean that Russell isn’t the better SS. Russell is expected to stay at SS, where Baez has been said since he was drafted that he will not.

          • JasonPen

I think it’s a great trade. Russell is a top prospect and Straily is a young SP with a high ceiling. In 2012 he had 190 k’s in only 150 IP…http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/prospects/prospect-bulletin/2012/2613832.html

        • Tony_H

On MLBtraderumors.com one comment says the A’s got fleeced, the next says the A’s got the better end.

          • RynoTiger

that’s because we’re all fans just tossing out our opinions and just like baseball execs we all have our own valuation on the teams we love

  • Tony_H

    Now seeing no PTBNL.

    • RynoTiger

well then my gut feeling is one of not really loving the deal. sure Reed is nice. and perhaps McKinney can be good too. Could Straily be a younger version of Hammel? possibly. Otherwise Shark went for Russell and McKinney…which shows just how wrong the experts were about what the Cubs would want/get in return for him. All the talk was top pitching prospects, not necessarily offensive prospects. So the Cubs can claim he went for another orgs top 2 prospects..just not what I think most of us expected.

      • Tony_H

Addison Russell was said to be untouchable. I would say expect the Cubs to go after one or two of the top SP’s in FA this year and to flip one of these prospect bats at some point. But you can never have too many elite SS.

        • RynoTiger

still surprised that no additional pitching was included in the deal for the Cubs. also tells us that no other team was going to give the Cubs any top prospects for Shark that rated near what the Cubs wanted or perhaps that was at Russell’s level.

          • Tony_H

I think it is just surprising since we expected an pitching based trade. I think the FO has shown they feel they can do a rotation from FA.

          • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

I expect more moves to come. Maybe nt right away but this is paving te way. I love the deal.

        • Swish23

They’ll never spend 150M plus to get Scherzer or 100M plus for Lester who is 31 and 2 years plus lots more IP than Shark. 2015 rotation will be wood, EJax, Arrieta,, Hendricks, Beeler, Straily, Jokisch, and maybe another flip. All # 4 SP. Maybe a #3 In good year.

          • Tony_H

We will see, but I think that know that the payroll is cleared of all bad contracts, and the offense will be able to be filled with young players, they will go after 1 or 2 SP’s and money won’t stop them, if they feel it makes sense.

          • SirGladiator

That’s probably not true, Lester has made it clear he wants to come to Chicago, and if Theo values him he’s going to be wearing Cubbie blue next year!

  • RynoTiger

this explains why Hammel was pulled from the game.

    • Tony_H

      I said this earlier tonight.

“It is frustrating as a pitcher to be taken out of game, not many pitchers will ever admit they should be taken out. But this is likely a sign that a trade will happen before his next start that he was pulled after 92 pitches and in the 7th inning.”

  • RynoTiger

Someone go interview Rizzo and ask him how he feels about this…could be some interesting comments tomorrow from the other players

    • Tony_H

      New thread is up.
