Cubs Reportedly One of the Teams Interested in Cuban Outfielder Rusney Castillo

According to a report from Jesse Sanchez, the Cubs are one of four teams that have expressed interest in Cuban OF Rusney Castillo. The free agent, who is represented by Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports, is holding a workout July 26 at the University of Miami. And while representatives from all 30 Major League teams are expected to attend, according to Sanchez’s sources the Cubs, along with the Braves, White Sox and Giants, are thought to be interested in signing him.

Rusney Castillo could sign quickly after the showcase according to reports.

Rusney Castillo is 27 years old and could be ready to play in the majors by the end of this season. But he would begin his professional career in the States in the minor leagues. There are conflicting reports on what type of player Castillo could be in the big leagues. According to reports, scouts have compared him to Jacoby Ellsbury, Kenny Lofton and Brett Gardner, while others see him as a fourth outfielder.

PrintBen Badler provided scouting information on Rusney Castillo, along with two video clips. According to the report in Baseball America, Castillo is 5-foot-9, 205 pounds and hits from the right side. Castillo “is an excellent athlete, a plus-plus runner” and features “a line-drive stroke from the right side and surprising power for his size.” And he was “one of the better basestealers in Cuba.”

Rusney Castillo defected from Cuba six months ago, established residency in Haiti and received clearance from the U.S. Government last week. Major League Baseball has declared Castillo a free agent so he can sign with any team. Reports and rumors have not indicated yet the length and amount of the contract Castillo could be looking to sign.
