CCO Fantasy Baseball League – Week 15

Most weeks are full of good close games. This week our closest games were 29, 38 and 39 points. This could have been expected as the top eight teams didn’t have one match-up against each other and the best match-up of the week was #6 vs #9 and then #3 vs #11.

Nine wins is where the playoffs are at with three 9-6 teams tied for the eighth spot. Just one team sits one game back at 8-7 and three more teams sit two games back at 7-8. The separation is real now with six teams that are three games or more back. With just six weeks left in the regular season we are in the stretch run for the playoff berths. We also have three teams that have been officially eliminated from the playoffs.

All-Star Teams

There was no fan voting, no managers filling out a ballot and no players were asked their opinions.  There is also no rule of every team being represented. The best of the best. In fantasy baseball, it is all about points. While the sabermetric community keeps trying to find the perfect stat, we already have one, points. Points rule and are the end all of any fantasy baseball league. Now point systems vary and can make one player great in one league and not so great in another. But we have our system and here are the All-Star Teams. A starting lineup with three bench players and five starting pitchers and three relief pitchers make up the team.

PrintThe Waveland team was made up of nine teams’ players, led by Clark n Addison Tony_H with five players and Kentucky Ripsnorters with three players.  The Sheffield team was made up of all 10 teams and was led by BigJonLilJon’s LehairOfTheDog with four players and Runnin’ Bredstiks and FL JimBoC with three players.

Transactions

The transaction wire stayed slow down this week with 23 free agent pick-ups. Even with some call-ups getting added, the waiver wire is still tough to find players that can help teams out. Of course, if it weren’t for players with ties to Cubs the waiver wire might be real slow. Tsuyoshi Wada, Sam Fuld, Nate Schierholtz, Chris Coghlan, Edwin Jackson and Dallas Beeler were all added this week.

Notes

Weeks 10 and 20 are the same match-up.
Weeks 11 and 21 are the same match-up.

So in weeks 10 and 21 we will be doing a position round. 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, etc down to 19 vs 20.

The league is for public viewing. Here are two shortcuts to take you to the league site on ESPN.

Game recaps include top scorer from each team and any other players who score 30+ points.

This week is actually a week and a half due to the All Star Game. The system allows for 2 full weeks of starts (16), but we will be doing a week and half worth of starts, 12.

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

Tony…I think I saw somewhere that I was nearing a total transaction max (50??) or something like that.

Is this true, and if so, why are we capping adds/subtracts, especially when it is often due to injuries?

      • Tony_H

So that teams can’t constantly drop and add players every week. I am in another league where we max at 30 and I haven’t hit it but the first year I did the league. The goal is to make the league more realistic.

        • BigJonLilJon

Trades don’t count towards transactions do they ? Just waiver pick ups?

        • Bredstik

I don’t mind the weekly cap of 4 moves per week, but am not crazy about the limit of 50 for the season. I’d think the weekly limit should be enough.

That being said, I actually like a lot of roster movement and encourage it in my other leagues. In a league like this though, where we set lineups daily, I understand that you probably have to limit it somewhat to prevent mass streaming.

          • Tony_H

24 weeks of the season @ 4 moves per week is 96 adds for the season. The roster is only 22. If there was no annual limit, I would say the weekly should be 2 and that can be tough when injuries hit.

I like moves, but not the type that are about maximizing today and are then reversed immediately. A little more about long term planning for roster construction I would say.

Can you imagine a 10 team league with daily lineups and no restrictions. You would be able making roster moves every day to maximize your points because the player pool would have tons of good players. I know that is the extreme, but I am trying to make it more like running a real MLB team.

  • Cubbiemacg

Half my team went on the dl before the all star break is going to be tough to get 12 starts lol.

    • Tony_H

At least you have 10 days to try :)

    • Ripsnorter1

And my whole roster went on the DL, too.
It will be tough to field a team. Tanaka is probably finished for the year, as well as my catcher Molina.

      • Cubbiemacg

I concede my argument to that one that’s a lot of points

        • Ripsnorter1

That’s a good looking little Cub fan you are holding in that photo. : )

          • Cubbiemacg

Thank you he’s went to opening day at the new spring training facility and he gets his first game Friday when the cubs come to phx. Them he gets his first taste of Wrigley against the cards on Sept 24th. Baseball keeps him quiet thankfully lol

  • CubfaninSeattle

Man my team stunk this year. Injuries to Belt, Cashner, and Aoki weren’t helpful and players such as Verlander, Butler, Bogaerts, and Walker just didn’t live up to expectations. It also didn’t help that I have the worst ‘defense’ in the league! Oh well, still a lot of fun. Like a good Cubby fan all I can say is, “Wait till next year!”

    • Ripsnorter1

Worst defense in the league? I am right behind you now, and led most of the year, if my eyes have been working correctly.

      • CubfaninSeattle

Agreed, but your offense is better than mine. :) … I’m not complaining, it’s the way fantasy baseball goes at times. One can score the 2nd most points in the week, but still possibly lose. Hopefully next year will be different.

        • Ripsnorter1

Tony Hall is right: the key to fantasy success is beginner’s luck, and poor roster management.

          • Tony_H

LOL! I think your luck has changed with your DL’d players. Tanaka is impossible to replace, especially in this league.

          • Ripsnorter1

I agree. Question: with Molina out 8 weeks, he’s done for the year, correct? We only have 8 weeks left, don’t we?

          • Tony_H

Likely to be our playoffs before he returns. Tough call!

            http://games.espn.go.com/flb/schedule?leagueId=2887

          • Ripsnorter1

Yup. My luck has changed. But my poor roster management has remained the same, so there is some hope still.

  • Cubbiemacg

I lost beckett McHugh and Hahn all in the same well that’s 3 of my best s p’s not to mention losing Brandon philips(he was finally becoming fantasy relevant) not to mention pagan and cudyear are pretty much gone for the season. This is a rough way too push for playoffs. I’m hanging on to the 8th spot . It could be worse I could be what’s optimism. Lots of points wasted on losses

    • Tony_H

Looks like McHugh and Beckett will get starts over the weekend or beginnig of next week. Injuries and juggling the DL has been very tough this year.

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

Karma is a bitch. Pretty sure McHugh crushed me during our matchups. :P

      • Cubbiemacg

Yeah all the of those pitchers Gabe me a good well against you

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

Cubs for sale here…I got Cubs for sale here!

Hit me up if you want to talk Coghlan, Hendricks, or Wada. Just remember my history…when I get rid of young/unproven players, they excel…so you want to be on the receiving end of my roster mismanagement. Make me an offer!

    • BigJonLilJon

So funny. I’ll give you a bag of balls and a nickel for the lot of them!!

      • JasonOfTheBurbs

laugh while you can, Mr Funny Man…as I predict our September storylines on the CCO will be all about the undefeated streaks of Wada and Hendricks since the All-Star Break, and whether Chris Coghlan is a better all-around player than Mike Trout!

        • BigJonLilJon

I would love to see it but it’s never going to happen. I’ll laugh on that one for a long while. You make me laugh. Funny guy.

        • TheWrongGuy

You beat me out on the waiver wire. I try’d to claim Kyle Hendricks as well.

        • Tony_H

LOL! Trying to promote guys you just picked up off of waivers as if they have trade value.

          • Ripsnorter1

I’d consider trading Tanaka for the right offer……

          • Tony_H

I bet you would. If we were in a keeper league you might get an offer. But if he needs TJ, then he won’t be much use next year either.

  • BillyFinT

That was a good week, not cuz my Boys of Marching Waters had a comeback V–they lost 1 or 2 , too. I got to finetune via FA of interstn players. Now just needa pull out a trade en route a complete Fantqasy exp. (dang, my arm hurts typn)

  • Tony_H

Just a reminder that this week starts tomorrow and runs for a week and a half (3 series). We will be having a max of 12 starts, not 16 like the website says.

    Big match-ups this week:

    #4 Clark n Addison Tony_H vs #6 Runnin’ Bredstiks

#7 BigJonLilJon’s LehairoftheDog vs #9 Northside Bleacher Bums

#8 Bullpen MacGyvers vs #11 The Wrong Team
