CCO Fantasy Baseball League – Week 14

Once again we had another week of good games this week. Three games decided by less than 25 points, while one was decided by just eight points. Eight wins is still where the playoffs are at with four 8-6 teams tied for the eighth spot. Two more teams sit one game back at 7-7 and only two more teams at 6-8, two games back. We are starting to see some separation as we now have five teams that are three games or more back. They are going to have to go on a winning streak to get back into contention with just seven weeks left before the playoffs.

Tony is on vacation this week and will be traveling until next Sunday. If you need anything please leave a post below, as that will go straight to his email and it will be easier to respond to anything that is needed versus using the leagues message board.

Hatfield’s and McCoy’s

We have had 4 weeks of interleague play. This week the Hatfield (Waveland) pulled out another weekly victory 6-4.  That leaves the bragging rights with the Hatfield’s (Waveland) with a record 16-14 over the McCoy’s (Sheffield) and a weekly record of 2-0-2.

#3 FL JimBoC (10-4) 336 over #1 Kentucky Ripsnorters (10-4) 297

Huge match-up this week and it didn’t disappoint. JimBoC pulled away over the weekend and thanks to new Cubs staff ACE Jake Arrieta (question?? did her earn the #1 slot or did he take it over by default after the big trade?) for continuing to perform like a TOR starter.

Kentucky Ripsnorters: Steven Pearce 42 pts. (3HR, 2 2B, 8 R, 9 RBI), Chris Archer 36 pts. (15.1 IP, 8 K, 4 ER, 11 H, 6 BB, W)

FL JimBoC: Jake Arrieta 52 pts. (13.2 IP, 15 K, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, W) Nelson Cruz 34 pts. (2 HR, 3 2B, 5 R, 5 RBI, 2 SB) Gio Gonzalez 32 pts. (8 IP, 7 K, 4 H, 0 ER, BB, W)

#5 07Greydigger’s Crushers (10-4) 356 over #2 The Calicubs (10-4) 338

PrintAnother big match that lived up to the hype this week. Both teams are heading towards the playoffs and gave strong performances both offensively and on the mound. Unfortunately, someone had to lose.

The Calicubs: Mat Latos 46 pts. (15 IP, 7 K, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, W) Jordan Zimmerman 33 pts. (12 IP, 10 K, 14 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, W) Max Scherzer 32 pts. (8 IP, 7 K, 2, H, 1 ER, 1 BB, W)

07Greydigger’s Crushers: Corey Kluber 51 pts. (15 IP, 15 K, 10 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, W) Tyson Ross 39 pts. (9 IP, 9 K, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, W) Joe Smith 33 pts. (4 IP, 2 K, 3 SV, W, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB) Paul Goldschmidt 34 pts. (HR, 3B, 4 2B, 5 R, 5 RBI) J.D. Martinez 32 pts. (3 HR, 2 2B, 3 R, 6 RBI)

#11 Aquas de Marco Billy (8-6) 294 over #4 BigJonLilJon’s Lehair of the Dog (9-5) 286

In a crucial match-up for the playoffs, Aquas de Marco pulled out a much needed win over BigJonLilJon. Aquas used the weekend to pull away for the victory.

BigJonLilJon’s Lehair of the Dog: Miguel Cabrera 31 pts. (HR, 4 2B, 8 R, 4 RBI) Darren O’Day 30 pts. (4.2 IP, 7 K, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 Holds)

Aguas de Marco Billy: Andrew McCutchen 33 pts. (HR, 2 3B, 2 2B, 4 R, 6 RBI, SB)

#6 Runnin’ Bredstiks (9-5) 226 over #20 Team Scared Hitless (1-13) 163

Bredstiks did what it had to do to pick up the tap in putt for a win.

Runnin’ Bredstiks: Jose Quintana 29 pts. (7.2 IP, 10 K, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB)

Team Scared Hitless: Desmond Jennings 33 pts. (HR, 5 2B, 7 R, 3 RBI)

#7 Clark n Addison Tony_H (9-5) 382 over #18 Balls Deep in the Ivy (3-11) 276

Another pitching dominates game for Clark as I left Wade Miley on the bench for both his starts and his 53 pts.

Clark n Addison Tony H: Garrett Richards 59 pts. (15.1 IP, 20 K, 8 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 W) Wade Miley 53 pts. (14.2 IP, 18 K, 9 H, 3 ER, BB, W) David Price 49 pts. (15.2 IP, 15 K, 11 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 2 W) Clayton Kershaw 35 pts. (8 IP, 8 K, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, W)

#12 What’s Optimism? Vivid Reality (7-7) 326 over #8 Bullpen MacGyvers (8-6) 303

Another good game this week and it What’s Optimism pulled out a much needed win while Bullpen MacGyvers took the loss, but held onto the 8th seed.

Bullpen MacGyvers: Jesse Hahn 39 pts. (12 IP, 14 K, 8 H, 3 ER 4 BB, W)

#13 Team JasonOfTheBurbs (7-7) 351 over #9 The Wrong Team (8-6) 243

JasonOfTheBurbs kept his sliver of hope alive by getting back to 500, but he better not of used up his best week as the schedule turns tough with Clark n Addison and Kentucky Ripsnorters 2 of the next 3 weeks.

The Wrong Team: Jeff Locke 43 pts. (16 IP, 7 K, 11 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, W)

Team JasonOfTheBurbs: Tim Lincecum 52 pts. (14.1 IP, 12 K, 7 H, 1 ER, 6 BB, 2 W) Matt Garza 38 pts. (9 IP, 9 K, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, W) Ubaldo Jimenez 32 pts. (8 IP, 7 K, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, W)

The transaction wire slowed down this week with 24 free agent pick-ups. Even with some call-ups getting added, the waiver wire is still tough to find players that can help teams out. Of course, if it weren’t for players with ties to Cubs the waiver wire might be real slow. Marwin Gonzalez, Tsuyoshi Wada, Dan Straily, Ricky Nolasco and Tyler Colvin all got added in the second part of the week.

Weeks 10 and 20 are the same match-up.
Weeks 11 and 21 are the same match-up.

So in weeks 10 and 21 we will be doing a position round. 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, etc down to 19 vs 20.

The league is for public viewing. Here are two shortcuts to take you to the league site on ESPN.

Game recaps include top scorer from each team and any other players who score 30+ points.

Anyone need a catcher? Derek Norris is having quite the year and is available. Looking for a SP.

  • Ripsnorter1

I have lost 4 times, and how did I lose?
    1. Edwin Jackson once put up a superstart and killed me off one week.
    2. Samardzija killed me off with a couple of starts one week.
    3. Last week Jake Arietta just destroyed me (thanks in part to Anabel Sanchez, in two starts, putting up just 5 points for the week).

75% of my troubles have come via Cub players playing over their heads.

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

you probably rejected a trade proposal I gave you on Arrieta…I got frustrated after his first 2 starts and offered him to half the league, and then dropped him when no one accepted trade offers.

I am sure that is a top 5 drop-I-wish-I-could-take-back that occurred in our league so far this year.

      • Ripsnorter1

52 points vs. me last week. Nearly throwing a no-hitter each time out. Striking out the entire world.

        Yeah. I wish I had him. : (

      • Tony_H

I have Arrieta in Billy’s league and I almost dropped him before he went on this run. I literally had the transaction on the screen and hit cancel instead of submit. Somehow, when I had EJAX on that team I had no problem swapping him out!

Mauer picked a bad week to go on the DL. I need good starts from all my SPs to beat Tony this week.

Some of us debate whether just being good and getting to playoffs consistently (and not winning WS) would be better and more enjoyable than if the Cubs won the WS but did not regularly make the playoffs.

In the real world, I would prefer the Cubs just make the playoffs regularly, and I don’t sweat the WS. Just happy to be entertained every year by a competitive team I can follow.

But in the Fantasy world, I am going for the WS, and since my playoff hopes are slim and my roster is good but not great, I am declaring my imminent defeat of Tony as my WS win. Going all in for this one!!

    • JasonOfTheBurbs

I typed the above before checking and seeing that Masterson is already pitching to a -5 after 3 innings, and Tillman (who I benched due to tough Nationals matchup against Strasburg) is at +10 after 3 innings.

      I hate fantasy baseball.

      • JasonOfTheBurbs

Masterson sucks. Everyone raved about this guy in ST…they hoped Samardzija would become him. This is why I loathe valuing pitchers on potential…they usually disappoint.

        • Ripsnorter1

What was I reading about Masterson the other day….I think he has shoulder issues. Either that or else he’s terribly overrated. I forget which one it was…..

          • TheWrongGuy

Masterson’s pitching wind-up will cause either his back or his shoulder go out eventually.

      • JasonOfTheBurbs

Cubs in rain delay at Reds…who play in OH. So I get excited that Masterson’s crappy start in Cleveland may get rained out. Quick check of shows the universe is allowing the sun to shine on Cleveland right now. WTF. Now I really hate fantasy baseball.

    • Tony_H

I had a decent start to my week. With only 1 start from a SP, I will take a 70 point day. Sometimes my lineup gets a little jealous of all the “press” that the pitching staff gets. But when they keep taking turns being in the Top 5 each week, you can understand why.

Good luck the rest of the week….you are going to need it.

  • BigJonLilJon

Lost by 8 points. Ouch. Picked up Gonzales and he lost 10 in his first start. Lol
But I still have a lot of hitting to trade for a good SP!!! If you need help at RF or 1B – make me an offer.
