Talkin’ Cubs Live – Cubs vs. Pirates – 06/12/14

Game Sixty-Four – Cubs (26-37) vs. Pirates (31-34)

  • Game Time – 6:05pm CDT
  • Coverage – TV: WGN TV – Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channels 183, 844
  • Location – PNC Park, Pittsburgh

Jeff Samardzija (2-5, 2.54/1.13/3.03) vs. Edinson Volquez (3-5, 4.27/1.17/4.82)

Weather permitting … The Cubs wrap-up the four-game series in Pittsburgh tonight behind Jeff Samardzija. And the first step in earning a split in the series will be for Samardzija and the Cubs pen to keep Andrew McCutchen from hitting the ball out of the park. McCutchen has gone deep in each of the first three games, to three different fields. McCutchen went oppo on Monday, hit a towering shot over the centerfield wall on Tuesday and pulled one over the wall in left, just out of the reach of Chris Coghlan last night.

Jeff Samardzija has been very good and not-so good in his career against the Bucs and tonight will be a challenge for him.

The offense has been cold, hot and cold again over the first three games. And the Cubs will try to do something tonight no other Cubs team has been able to do, beat Edinson Volquez. The veteran right hander has never lost a game to the Cubs.

Rick Renteria should run out a balanced lineup tonight that includes Mike Olt. Right handers (.225/.289/.337) and lefties (.232/.303/.405) hit basically the same against Edinson Volquez and Olt should match-up rather well against Volquez

Tonight all starts with Jeff Samardzija …

Jeff Samardzija bounced back from his bad outing in Milwaukee and put together a good start against the Marlins his last time out. Samardzija limited the Fish to two runs on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in seven innings. Samardzija found a groove, threw strikes and picked up his second win of the season.

Like the rest of his teammates, the road has been rough for Samardzija this season. In six starts outside of Wrigley, Samardzija is 1-2 with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. But Samardzija was pretty good at PNC Park on Opening Day with seven innings of shutout ball while allowing five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jeff Samardzija has had success in the past against the Pirates (4-3 in 19 games, eight starts with a 1.90 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP) but will have to stay focused tonight in order to avoid a similar start to last June 8 versus the Pirates when he gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings.

Pirates Career Numbers against Jeff Samardzija

The Cubs will see a familiar face in Edinson Volquez. Volquez has had his way with the Cubs over the year whether he was wearing a Reds cap, a Padres cap or a Dodgers cap, he always seems to have good starts against the Cubs. Volquez is coming off a Volquez-type start against the Brewers in which he allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings. Over his last two starts, Volquez is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.

For as inconsistent as Volquez has been this year, he’s been solid at PNC Park. In eight games, seven starts, Volquez is 2-3 with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. Edinson Volquez will face the Cubs for the second time this season, first start, after posting a 5-0 record in nine career games, eight starts, against the Cubs with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.

The Cubs have to make him work and throw as many pitches early in the game, if they don’t Edinson Volquez will beat the Cubs again.

I don’t see why we run Barney out there. Have young guys that need to get at bats like Olt. Olt isn’t any worse than Barney but at least he has potential and is a threat to go yard at any time.

    • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

If it’s about matchups like Renteria says tonight seems like a night to build some confidence in Olt.

    • Ripsnorter1

His glove will lead us to the World Series!

      LOL

Should have been non-tendered last fall.

      • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

I wouldn’t have necessarily dumped him. His glove has value as a late inning replacement. And if e played on a team like Baltimore or another with a lineup of mashers he could be really valuable.

I don’t think he will end the season with the Cubs. He will be thrown in a trade or something.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Tonight’s start has been pushed to 6:15pm CDT

  • jtrain23

Glad to see Luis Luis back in the lineup again tonight. I see no reason why he isn’t considered an everyday player at this point on this roster. He should run out at second or 3rd every night with Olt and Barney sharing reps. He has a solid glove, is high energy, and is consistent at the plate this year. Unless it’s someone from Iowa or his play drastically plummets, I want him out there.

    • Ripsnorter1

Here’s why: he hits RHP, but not LHP. And don’t forget, he’s a career .218 hitter.

      • jtrain23

I know the trend and that history is often the best indicator of future events. Im not saying that he is ideal or an all star caliber infielder. I’m simply saying that I want to see him going out there as much as possible the way the roster is currently constructed.

What is your better option right now? Is it Barney batting .193 with no power or Olt batting .150 with 57 strikeouts in 51 games. Granted he has some pop (9 homers), but he hasn’t hit one in nearly a month and he’s 1 for his last 33 at bats.

Is Valbuena the future of this team? Probably not. He probably doesn’t even have as much long term potential as Olt does. But he’s the best they have right now and he’s not holding anyone back that is on the current roster, so I say he should be playing until his performance dictates otherwise.

        • Ripsnorter1

Yes, he should be playing every day. He’ll be benched vs LHP. He’s slugging this year, though not hitting as many HRs yet as I want. I thought you were saying he’s our everyday for years to come.

          • jtrain23

I hope not. Nothing against him. I think he would be an extremely valuable utility guy on a good team. I love his spirit and I love the way he plays the game.

He’s not a guy whose name is brought up often, but he would be valuable to a playoff team down the stretch.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Now, 6:25pm CDT first pitch

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Bonifacio is hurt, laying on the ground in pain

  • Brp921

There were a lot of great memories in that rain delay special.

  • Roland Bowman

What a weird slide by Lake into 2nd. He had it easy if he would have just went straight to it. Instead he tried to go to the outfield side of the bag, was safe but over slid it and was tagged out.

    • Tony_H

The bag was blocked by the infielder, that is why he slid wide.

      • Roland Bowman

I don’t know if it was the SS or 2nd baseman, but that doesn’t seem smart at all. A feet first slide and he is going to get cleats to the calf.

        • Tony_H

I agree, I really don’t like the head first slide except when necessary.

  • Roland Bowman

A couple heaters inside seemed to shake McCrutchen

  • Roland Bowman

    Valbuena stays hot

    • Tony_H

For a player who is still just 28, he could still go on to have a nice career.

      • Roland Bowman

The Cubs have Villanueva and Alcantara coming up that I think project to be utility infielders. Valbuena as a utility infielder, 400 AB per season, teams can do worse.

        • Tony_H

Alcantara will be looked at to start at 2B or the OF. Villanueva is going to be given a chance to stay at 3B, but Watkins is the best and most likely utility guy coming up.

          • Roland Bowman

In my dream world, Bryant is at 3B, Baez at 2B. Alcantara as a super utility, 2B, SS, OF. Vilanueva is a utility infielder.

          • Tony_H

I think the lineup is going to need Alcantara in it as a switch hitter and is better defensively than Baez. So I put Baez at 3B and Bryant in RF.

          • Ripsnorter1

If Baez doesn’t cool off the strikeouts, he won’t be up here anytime soon. Unless they pull another Mike Olt.

          • Tony_H

His number look better since May 1st. He will always strike out a lot.

          • John_CC

I’m with Tony. Alcantara, I hope, can be an everyday player at 2B. More and more I tend to see Baez moving to the OF.

      • Ripsnorter1

Let’s not get too crazy..this is his career year.

But if you want to get intoxicated with Valbuena, here’s something to swill:

Since May 13 (ie, the last 30 days), Mr. Valbuena is hitting .384–and that is tops in the NL.

        • Tony_H

I agree, but I think he will be traded to a team that needs infield help soon.

        • Tony_H

Are you not still on the Valbuena bandwagon in fantasy?

          • Ripsnorter1

            He’s on my team.

          • Ripsnorter1

You want to trade for him?

          • Tony_H

Nope, I have plenty of infielders. Actually have a pretty good mix with 2 options across the infield.

          • Ripsnorter1

I picked up Chase WHitley this afternoon to start tonight, and the league would not let me start him. What gives?

          • Vivid_Reality

Rosters lock when the first game starts.

          • Tony_H

You can still make lineup adjustments until each player players, but roster moves have to be done before the first player plays. I got caught on Swisher today, as I didn’t know if he would come off the DL or not. By the time they activated him, I couldn’t make the move for today.

          • Ripsnorter1

            Gag! I needed a streamer!

            BURNT AGAIN!

          • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Please read the comment policy. Thank you for following the rules you have asked to be upheld.

          • Tony_H

Same here. I almost made the roster move this morning, but never thought about how it worked. Of course this makes me hope he doesn’t have a big game.

        • Roland Bowman

You were calling for 20 HRs from Valbuena this year.

          • Ripsnorter1

            Yes. He’s slugging well…..459 I think. That’s pretty good.

          • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

            I think I called for that…

          • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

            Rip did too I think

          • Roland Bowman

Well now Luis has to deliver or he has to guys two answer to.

      • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

I’ve been saying the same thing. He is young and he has steadily improved each year. It seems like each year he’s about 1/3rd better than he was the year before. I he keeps that up for two more seasons he is a borderline all-star in a below average team.

  • No Baseball In Indiana

Nothing more disgusting than a close up of Volquez mawwing down on gum like a slack jawed fool

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

From the Sun-Times: Right rib cage injury for Bonifacio. Looks like DL move by tomorrow.

    • Ripsnorter1

Frankly, I want to see others get a chance to play everyday. Kalish would be better than Coghlan. And please: NO SWEENEY.

      • Tony_H

It is most likely going to be Sweeney as he is about to come off the DL anyway. But Watkins would be a good reward for what he has been doing in Iowa, even if it is short term.

        • Ripsnorter1

Another bad signing. Poor Roster Management!

          • Tony_H

I think Sweeney will be just fine. He has his first child earlier this year and I still think that effected him to start the year. Let’s face it, your first child changes your entire world.

          • Ripsnorter1

It didn’t change mine, and I’ve got seven of them…..unless you are speaking about lack of sleep, walking the floor at night with a crying baby, and a wife that cannot walk, 150 loads of laundry per day, cooking and cleaning since the wife is down, and a lack of money. Besides that, nothing changed except the diapers.

          • Tony_H

Sounds just like the life of a young bachelor or newlywed couple.

          • Ripsnorter1

            Those were the days….

          • http://theboardridersuite.wordpress.com/ Theboardrider

He just doesn’t bring much excitement. But if he can get back his pre injury 2013 form he will be a great addition.

    • Tom U

If it means anything, Kalish is in the lineup for Iowa tonight but Watkins is not. Sweeney also did not start for Kane County.

      • John_CC

Well a couple options I guess. Watkins could be a duplicate replacement, ie 2b and CF. Or they could just go w a CF, Sweeney I guess. But that is a go nowhere prop, its time to give Watkins another chance.

  • Tony_H

I sure wish they would kick these guys out that spend the whole game hollowing at each other.

    • No Baseball In Indiana

Pirates fans were the absolute worst during last years playoffs. Nothing but a bunch classless bandwagon Steelers fans

      • Tony_H

Cincinnati has had this hollowing issue as well.

  • Roland Bowman

    Shark gets the bunt down.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Ryan Sweeney has been lifted from tonight’s rehab game

    • Tony_H

      Makes sense.

    • RynoTiger

So he’s probably coming back now that Bonifacio could go on the DL….or he got hurt again

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Sweeney will meet up with the team in Philly. Sounds like Bonifacio is going on the DL

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    What a throw by Schierholtz

  • Roland Bowman

Nice job by schierholtz getting in position before making the catch.

  • Roland Bowman

    Apparently not shaken enough

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

McCutchen just missed another home run

  • Roland Bowman

    An excuse me swing double.

  • Tony_H

If Bonifacio does end up on the DL, Coghlan or a bullpen arm is likely to be cut/sent down to bring up another IF. Bonifacio gave us a 5th OF and a 6 IF with one roster spot. Not sure how long we can go with only 5 IF options in Rizzo, Valbuena Barney Castro and Olt.

  • GaryLeeT

Samardzija has had his share of tough luck, but this loss has been fully earned.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Samardzija’s double is why bunting with this roster makes zero sense

  • SuzyS

Tom U or Neil…or anyone…What’s the story on Dillon Maples? I just tried searching for him…and all I found was that he ‘s on the 7 day DL with Kane County. Anyone have any more info than that?

    • GaryLeeT

I found him….on the dust heap of Cub baseball hopefuls. Sorry, but I believe he no longer plays professional baseball.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Maples broke a rib in his upper back in early April. The last update I had was he was expected to be out at least eight weeks.

      • SuzyS

Thanks, Neil. it sounds like a tough injury. I know there were once high hopes for him…Hopefully he can turn himself around from a really strange career start.

        • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

You’re more than welcome, as always. I agree, maybe he will be able to get his career on track after this.

  • GaryLeeT

Last night it was Castro, and Schierholtz as the super chokers, tonight it’s Lake and Schierholtz. I think there is a common thread here.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Rain delay …

Justin Steele is twittering that he signed. With the Cubs.
