Travis Wood (5-5, 5.15/1.38/3.83) vs. Jacob deGrom (0-2, 2.42/1.08/4.52)

The Cubs will shoot to complete the three-game sweep over the Mets behind Travis Wood. The Cubs need a good effort from Wood tonight and for him to shorten the game for the bullpen. The Cubs’ relief corps has been good of late, but the pen has pitched nearly half of the innings in the first two games of this series.

The Cubs enter play tonight one game under .500 at Wrigley Field (12-13) this season. Travis Wood has pitched rather well at home this year and for as bad as the Cubs’ record is this season, a .500 mark at home would be nice to see.

The Mets have the market cornered on players that last names start with a lower case ‘d’ … Travis d’Arnaud, Matt den Dekker and tonight’s starter, Jacob deGrom. deGrom is making just his fifth big league start and has pitched rather well for the Metropolitans this season. Look for a balanced lineup tonight from Rick Renteria. Right handers (.171/.261/.326) have hit about the same as lefties (.191/.296/.315) against deGrom at the big league level.

While the focus will be on the draft, the game at Wrigley all starts with Travis Wood …

There are no two ways about it Travis Wood is coming off a very bad outing in Milwaukee. Wood could not complete three innings and was shelled. Wood gave up seven runs on 10 hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. With bad starts on the South Side and in Milwaukee, Wood finished May with a 4-2 record in six starts with a 6.62 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Wood did not fool many of the teams he faced and was probably glad to see the calendar flip to June.

Travis Wood has been a different pitcher at Wrigley this year than on the road. Outside of his home park, Wood is 2-4 in six starts with an 8.04 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP. Teams have hit .326 against him and he’s walked (14) almost as many batters as he’s struck out (19). At Wrigley, Wood is 3-1 in five starts with a 2.43 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP. Teams have managed a .194 batting average and Wood has walked (7) a fifth of the batters he’s struck out (39).

Tonight is Wood’s fifth career start versus the Metropolitans. Travis Wood is 2-0 in the first four with a 2.92 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP, last year Wood received a no decision in his only outing against the Mets (three runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in seven innings).

Mets Career Numbers against Travis Wood

The Cubs will get their first look at rookie right-hander, Jacob deGrom. The Mets selected deGrom in the ninth round of the 2010 draft and will be making his fifth big league start and appearance tonight. deGrom is coming off a solid outing in Philadelphia in which he struck out 11 batters and allowed three runs on three hits with two walks in 6 1/3 innings. deGrom has pitched well for the Mets and will be a huge challenge for the Cubs tonight.

Jacob deGrom is making his second road start at Wrigley Field and no one on the Cubs’ active roster has faced deGrom in a regular season big league ballgame.

John Baker took foul ball to throat Wednesday is sidelined. Whiteside to start maybe next 2-3 games. If Baker cannot go in an emergency Luis Valbuena is the Cubs third catcher

Personally I’d bat wood 8th and Whiteside 9th. Wood is a better hitter.

      You don’t say?

    • Tony_H

Wood should bat 4th in this lineup.

Cubs selected C Kyle Schwarber of Indiana University with the 4th pick in the MLB Draft. Of course! the only guy without a Twitter account.

Looked at the video. The ball comes off his bat well.

    Wow. Hoffman went 9th

Not the way that I would run my shop.

Travis Wood is taking the phrase “doing it all” to the extreme. What a show.

Who didn’t see the Giants taking Beede? Watch him live up to the hype now.
