Edwin Jackson (3-5, 4.81/1.41/3.24) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-0, 2.45/1.16/3.68)
Weather permitting … The Cubs will shoot for two wins in a row over the Mets behind Edwin Jackson. The Cubs need a good outing from Jackson tonight but if he runs into problems early look for Carlos Villanueva to make an appearance. The backend of the pen is in good shape, even with picking up 4 1/3 innings on Tuesday in relief of Jake Arrieta. Neil Ramirez and Hector Rondon were very efficient and Rick Renteria did not have to use Wesley Wright.
Daisuke Matsuzaka makes his second start of the season tonight. Dice-K has been very good against lefties this season (.093/.264/.185) and has limited right handers (.172/.319/.208) as well. And while it is a small sample size, a right-handed heavy lineup could end up benefiting the struggling Cubs’ offense.
Tonight all starts with Edwin Jackson …
Edwin Jackson, like Jake Arrieta, is coming off a better start in San Francisco than his final line indicates. Jackson was charged with two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings but both runs scored after Jackson left the game and questionable bullpen usage by his manager. Jackson bounced back nicely from his horrible outing in San Diego and issued two walks while striking out nine batters for the second time this season.
Edwin Jackson finished May with a 1-3 record in five starts with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP that included 35 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings with seven walks. Jackson is 2-1 in five starts at Wrigley this year with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP and will face the Mets for the seventh time in his career tonight.
In six career starts against the Mets, Edwin Jackson is 2-2 with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Jackson was 1-1 in the two games with the Metropolitans last season with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is making just his second start of the season today. Matsuzaka pitched in back-to-back games out of the Mets pen on May 30 and May 31, his last two appearances. The last time Matsuzaka started a game was back on May 25 at Citi Field against the D-Backs. Matsuzaka went six innings, allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts … and the Mets won the game 4-2.
Daisuke Matsuzaka has faced the Cubs once in his career. Almost two years ago to the day (June 15, 2012), the Cubs beat Matsuzaka and the Red Sox at Wrigley Field, 3-0. Ryan Dempster picked up the win, Carlos Marmol took the loss and the Cubs improved to 22-42 on the season.
