Edwin Jackson (3-5, 4.81/1.41/3.24) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-0, 2.45/1.16/3.68)

Weather permitting … The Cubs will shoot for two wins in a row over the Mets behind Edwin Jackson. The Cubs need a good outing from Jackson tonight but if he runs into problems early look for Carlos Villanueva to make an appearance. The backend of the pen is in good shape, even with picking up 4 1/3 innings on Tuesday in relief of Jake Arrieta. Neil Ramirez and Hector Rondon were very efficient and Rick Renteria did not have to use Wesley Wright.

Daisuke Matsuzaka makes his second start of the season tonight. Dice-K has been very good against lefties this season (.093/.264/.185) and has limited right handers (.172/.319/.208) as well. And while it is a small sample size, a right-handed heavy lineup could end up benefiting the struggling Cubs’ offense.

Tonight all starts with Edwin Jackson

Edwin Jackson, like Jake Arrieta, is coming off a better start in San Francisco than his final line indicates. Jackson was charged with two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings but both runs scored after Jackson left the game and questionable bullpen usage by his manager. Jackson bounced back nicely from his horrible outing in San Diego and issued two walks while striking out nine batters for the second time this season.

Edwin Jackson finished May with a 1-3 record in five starts with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP that included 35 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings with seven walks. Jackson is 2-1 in five starts at Wrigley this year with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP and will face the Mets for the seventh time in his career tonight.

In six career starts against the Mets, Edwin Jackson is 2-2 with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Jackson was 1-1 in the two games with the Metropolitans last season with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP.

Mets Career Numbers against Edwin Jackson

Daisuke Matsuzaka is making just his second start of the season today. Matsuzaka pitched in back-to-back games out of the Mets pen on May 30 and May 31, his last two appearances. The last time Matsuzaka started a game was back on May 25 at Citi Field against the D-Backs. Matsuzaka went six innings, allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts … and the Mets won the game 4-2.

Daisuke Matsuzaka has faced the Cubs once in his career. Almost two years ago to the day (June 15, 2012), the Cubs beat Matsuzaka and the Red Sox at Wrigley Field, 3-0. Ryan Dempster picked up the win, Carlos Marmol took the loss and the Cubs improved to 22-42 on the season.

Looks like Eddie Butler is making his MLB debut here in Denver vs. the Dodgers on Friday night. I really doubt the Rockies are going to trade for Shark; given how cheap their ownership group is I can’t see them paying Shark or giving up controllable prospects for him. But he was mentioned as a possible return via trade, and considering Rockies tickets are $5 on the street before games I think I may head to the park to see the kid pitch.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Castro with one charged error, Mets up 1-0

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Bad location from Jackson, two-run double for Duda.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Castro with a solid single to right. Got one of the runs back.

  • cubtex

What an awful pitching matchup! 2 slow workers with no command.

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

      That was a 37-minute, 59-pitch first inning.

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

And, let me add, painful to watch.

        • Bredstik

Second inning starting off just as slow. At least we got to learn about the Shawon-O-Meter!

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Nice tag by Rizzo to complete the double play

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

    Don Zimmer has passed away.

    • Tony_H

Always one of my favorites. Sad news.

      • Bredstik

Mine too. Gonna miss Popeye. The ’89 season with him was a lot of fun. He pushed all the right buttons that year.

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

One of my favorites as well.

        • Bredstik

MLB Network doing a real nice profile on Zimmer right now.

          • Tony_H

            Thanks for sharing.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Renteria ejected for the 4th time this season

    • Tony_H

Even Renteria was tired of the slow pace of this game. Just was begging Tichenor to help speed the game along.

    • cubtex

Again? Awful high number for such a bad team

      • cubtex

I really dislike all this crying about the umpire so early in games. What is it? 3rd inning?

        • John_CC

Weren’t crying about it in the first? ;)

  • Tony_H

    RIP Don Zimmer

  • Baron_S

Bonifacio is turning into Rickys Neifi Perez

    • GaryLeeT

      “But what about Hollie?”

Bonifascio is a poor fielding 2B. And he’s not hitting a lick, either. So why does he play ahead of Valbuena, who at least gets on base and can catch the ball?

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Valbuena has been dealing with an abdominal issue. Played yesterday, but still not right.

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Valbuena is in the game and I agree with you about him playing second base.

    • RynoTiger

wow I didn’t know you could upload video into the discussions.

So Neil does this mean we’ll be seeing video of you announcing the starting line ups or doing post game summaries from the CCO Studio? Or Perhaps inviting Tom in to do a video review and chat about the minor league system? or inviting some posters into the studio for debates? :)

      • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

This is just a little vine from a outside link. I don’t have the capacity to post video.

  • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

Castro ties it up with a two-run single

  • GaryLeeT

Is there 15K at ballpark tonight?

    • GaryLeeT

Is there 3K fans still at Wrigley, after a slim Cub 5-4 lead after 7?

  • cubtex

Wow. Just looked and they have played 2 hours and 20 minutes and haven’t completed 5 innings yet. Unbelievable

    • http://chicagocubsonline.com/ Neil

For what its worth, this game is now in my top 10 for the worst pitched games I’ve ever seen.

      • cubtex

Was out with the dog for about an hour and thought the game would at least in the 7th(even at this pace) At least the 2 starters are finally out :)

  • GaryLeeT

I don’t know how many of you are actually watching the game, but when Rizzo scores the run on a wild pitch there is a fan in the home plate shot that does this fake cheer with a beer in his hand, that made me laugh for 5 minutes.

  • Tom U

In better news for everyone out there, the Kane County Cougars won 5-4 in 10 innings to improve their record to 39-20 and reduce their magic number to 3 to secure an appearance in this season’s playoffs.

  • Eugene Debs

Wright with a big strike out.

  • Zonk

Bases loaded, It’s time for a jOlt

    • Zonk

…or a strikeout. Two things he seems to be good at

  • Denver Mike

Olt looks like he’s just blindly guessing up there

  • gary3411

Olt needs to go to AAA. He’s probably destined to join Vitters and Jackson there fro the next 2-3 years before, well, whatever it is they do next.

    • RynoTiger

Olt and Barney need go to Iowa. Perhaps they can find some resemblance of offensive production again. Wouldn’t hurt to bring up Watkins and Villanueva to fill their spots to see what they can do.

  • Denver Mike

Note in advance the following article has nothing to do with baseball or the Cubs, but it’s brief and touches on paying for past performance, and being realistic about your team’s expectations. I think Klinsmann is a bit too frank with some of his comments, but overall I think the sentiment is right on and applies to many of the things we discuss right here.
