Kyle Schwarber, Daury Torrez and Dae-Eun Rhee Take Home Weekly Minor Awards

Arismendy Alcantara wasn’t the only player in the Cubs’ system that was recognized for his play over the last week. OF/C Kyle Schwarber and RHP Daury Torrez were named Player and Pitcher of the Week in the Midwest League while RHP Dae-Eun Rhee was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week Monday for the week of June 23-29.

OF/C Kyle Schwarber

All Kyle Schwarber has done since he reported to the Boise Hawks is hit the baseball. Schwarber was named Player of the Week for his league for the second time in his short professional career. Schwarber has only played 15 games in the Cubs’ system and has hit a combined .481/.554/1.056 with five doubles, one triple, eight home runs, eight walks, nine strikeouts and a 1.609 OPS.

In 10 games for Kane County, Kyle Schwarber has hit .412/.512/.882/1.395 with four doubles, four home runs, six walks and seven strikeouts.

PrintFor the week, Kyle Schwarber was 9-for-22 with three doubles, three home runs, five walks and six strikeouts. Schwarber has reached base safely, either with a hit or a walk, in each of his last 10 games.

RHP Daury Torrez

Daury Torrez pitched a gem Thursday against Wisconsin. The recently turned 21-year old Torrez struck out seven batters without issuing a single walk over eight shutout innings. Torrez scattered five hits and is 3-0 in his last four starts with a 2.63 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. Torrez has allowed 21 hits with one walk and 15 strikeouts in his last 24 innings.

For the season, Daury Torrez is 8-3 in 14 games with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. In 80 1/3 innings, Torrez has allowed 33 runs, 28 earned, on 71 hits with 13 walks and 45 strikeouts

RHP Dae-Eun Rhee

Dae-Eun Rhee picked up two wins over the last week and arguably put together his best start of the season Sunday night. Rhee held Montgomery to one run on seven hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts in seven innings. In his previous outing against Jackson, Rhee gave up one run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

Dae-Eun Rhee is the fourth Smokie in a row to take home a Player of the Week award. Kris Bryant won back-to-back Player of the Week awards before the All-Star break and Rubi Silva was named Player of the Week last Monday. Rhee is the fourth different Smokie to be named the league’s player of the week and joins rotation-mate RHP Corey Black as the only other pitcher from the Smokies roster to take home the award.

For the season, Dae-Eun Rhee is 5-3 in 17 games, 15 starts, with a 3.10 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. In 98 2/3 innings, Rhee has given up 86 hits and 36 walks with 59 strikeouts.

It’s like success is just contagious in our systems. These guys are all feeding off each other and stepping up their games to grab attention amongst a big group of guys worthy of attention. We’ve got some powerful trade tools when deals come along. A plethora of talent is a good problem. Too many guys without enough playing spots is a new position for our Cubs.

Schwarber hasn’t been challenged enough yet. I wish they’d just stick him in AA and see what he’s really made of.
