Boise Hawks Release Tentative Opening Day Roster

The Boise Hawks, the Short-Season A-Ball affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, released a tentative Opening Day roster Monday afternoon. Gary Van Tol’s team begins the 2014 season this Friday against Tri-City at Memorial Stadium in Boise.

For those familiar with the minor leagues, the Hawks’ first roster is chocked full of names that you may have heard before. Eleven of the 25 players have seen action already in affiliated minor league games, with six of those eleven appearing at Low-A Kane County or higher. And 13 of the players on the roster are at least 22-years old.

Among the Hawks to watch are three players coming back from major arm injuries. RHP Josh Conway had Tommy John surgery prior to being drafted in 2012, and had a stress fracture in his elbow during Spring Training in 2013. Both RHP Ryan McNeil and INF Tim Saunders are also recovering from Tommy John Surgery.

Also notable are a few players that were not included on the Hawks’ first roster of the season. Corner infielder Roney Alcala, middle infielder Bryant Flete and outfielder Shamil Ubiera all had outstanding springs, yet were left behind in Arizona.

The Boise Hawks roster is expected to change prior to Friday’s opener and could include a player or two that were drafted last weekend. Kyle Schwarber and Mark Zagunis are expected to see time in Boise at some point this season and Jake Stinnett could as well but it is unclear how much Stinnett will pitch in the Cubs’ system after he signs.

The Hawks’ staff also features Trevor Clifton, Scott Frazier and Erick Leal, just to name a few. And Mark Malave is on the roster as one of the Hawks’ catchers. Jesse Hodges and Giuseppe Papaccio, along with Tim Saunders highlight the list of infielders on the Hawks’ first roster.

Gary Van Tol will call the shots for the Hawks this season with Brian Lawrence (pitching coach), Jesus Feliciano (hitting coach), Guillermo Martinez (assistant coach) and Toby Williams (trainer) rounding out his staff.

Would be great to see Schwarber and Stinett in time to start the season with Boise. They recently played so should be able to slide in. Can’t wait to follow these two.

I’m looking forward to seeing some of last year’s draft picks like Frazier, Masek, Garner, Clifton, Graham, and Papaccio perform. I could see Schwarber or Zagunis getting some significant time if they sign soon, but I wonder how much Stinett will pitch in the minors this year after logging a full season in college.
