Arismendy Alcantara is Pushing for a Promotion and Other I-Cubs Stats

Arismendy Alcantara had another big game at the plate Friday night in Colorado. Alcantara went 4-for-6 with a three-run homer, four RBI and three runs scored. Alcantara has really excelled in the leadoff spot for the I-Cubs. Alcantara has reached base safely in 10 of his last 11 games and is riding a six-game hitting streak. Alcantara has recorded seven multi-hit games in his last 10.

Over his last 10 games, while playing second base and centerfield, Arismendy Alcantara is 18-for-39 with five doubles, one triple, two home runs, five walks, nine strikeouts and six stolen bases … .462/.511/.795/1.306. For the month of June (26 games), Alcantara is slashing .340/.391/.560 with seven doubles, three triples, three home runs, nine walks, 23 strikeouts, eight stolen bases and a .951 OPS.

For the season, the switch-hitting Arismendy Alcantara is batting .301/.343/.547 with 21 doubles, 10 triples, 10 home runs and a .890 OPS. Alcantara leads the PCL in triples (10), fourth in doubles (21), ninth in hits (87), third in total bases (158) and sixth in stolen bases (18).

Arismendy Alcantara continues to work counts and has really improved his approach at the plate over the last two seasons.

Arismendy Alcantara is on the Cubs’ 40-man roster and can be called up without the Cubs having to make a roster move. Alcantara is currently on an optional assignment with the Iowa Cubs after being added to the 40-man roster in the off-season.

The Iowa Cubs lit up the scoreboard Friday night in Colorado Springs. The I-Cubs topped the Sky Sox 16-3 with Chris Rusin picking up the win. And Rusin hit the first home run of his professional career. Iowa pounded out a season-high 19 hits. Veteran Chris Valaika hit a grand slam and Rafael Lopez recorded his first double at the Triple-A level.

Kris Bryant went 3-for-6 with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI in the win. Bryant has hit safely in six straight games. Bryant is 10-for-33 with three doubles, five home runs, five walks and 14 strikeouts in nine games with Iowa … .303/.395/.848/1.243.

Arodys Vizcaino has pitched better than his numbers indicate since his promotion. Vizcaino gave up two runs on four hits and a walk in his first game in a third of an inning. Over his last two appearances, Vizcaino has not allowed a run while giving up two hits and one walk with a strikeout.

Kyle Hendricks notched his PCL best ninth win Thursday night and is 9-5 in 15 starts this season with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. Over his last five starts, Hendricks is 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP (13 runs, 25 hits, seven walks and 27 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings).

Arismendy will be able to hit for a better avg. than Darwin Barney! Let’s bring him up and release Barney. If a team wants to pick Darwin up after we release him. Let them have a good defense play at can hit around a 200 averange.

    • GoCubs

Barney is better than 200 hitter, but point noted.

      • Tony d

Barney is hitting 201 this year and hit 208 last year with a combined 660 at bats. That is terrible!

      • bmoneyy20

barney might be the worst hitter in MLB

    • BosephHeyden

I don’t know if you can completely abandon Barney because his defense is there, but it is obvious Alcantara is better at this point. Which brings up a question: does Barney have any options left? If so, maybe it might do him some good to get sent down to Triple A and rebuild his confidence.

      • Tony d

I just don’t know how much more I can take with these major league ball players hitting around 200. Just a few years ago, we heard that the major league pitching is deluded and week.

        • Tony_H

Look around the majors, the average of the league, HR’s, etc have been on a downward trend.

          Pitchers are having delusions? lol

So much good now in Iowa. Hendricks is ready for a call if anyone is. He’s excelled everywhere he’s ever been. No reason to think he can’t be a 3 starter eventually in Chicago.

    Alcantra should be up.

Bryant crossed back above a .300 average.

Vitters is making an argument to get another try in Chicgo.

Baez is Baez. Strikes out but obviously is special.

We are getting close fellas! The next 18 months should be a whirlwind of fun for Cubs fans. Even if were not postseason ready next season the future is arriving! Were goin to be a team everyone is talking about soon and we’ve done it te right way. From within. And were set up to be good for a long while. We got a pipeline of position talent and depth all over the organization.

TOR pitching is still a question but we do have Arietta locke up. Hendricks and Beeler can come up and we know they’ll be solid if not spectacular. I think the floor for them is similar to Travis Wood. And hopefully once the trades happen we will have our TOR in Iowa knocking in the door. And Edwards close behind to join. And who knows what else? Daniel Norris would be a potential TOR just a little behind the others. If it’s not him we get it will be similar.

You know theo could bring back an old friend this fall to help mentor as well as help us win now. Josh beckett has been lights out this year and it’s a contact yr. With shark, beckett, wood, arrieta, and Hendricks/Beeler we could have a post season caliber staff and beckett should come at a reasonable price and maybe throw theo a discount. I mean beckett will replace what Hammel has done but also strong veteran presence and a proven winner. Could save money in the budget over Masterson or whoever. As well as allow a lil more budget for an outfielder

      • Theboardrider

very interestinhg idea… i like it!

      • Eugene Debs

No players with options is going to play for the Cubs at a discount. I like gig idea of Beckett, but he’s gonna cost us.

        • Cubbiemacg

He’s 34, made millions, won a series or two. What does he have to lose. And by discount I don’t mean 5 mil just not 15 mil

  • JasonOfTheBurbs

seems like both Beeler and Hendricks have pretty low WHIPs compared to what you expect from just looking at their ERA. So does that mean they are giving up the HR ball often, or perhaps poor defense behind them?

    • Tom U

Beeler has given up 4 HR in 60.1 IP while Hendricks has 4 in 94.2, if that helps

      • Tom U

The Iowa pitching staff has only 37 unearned runs in 79 games, so the defense can’t be that bad.

      • mutantbeast

I HR every 15 immings in the PCL, a notorius hitters league, is really good. From what Ive heard, Beeler was near the top of the PC L in GB%, which means he likely has grounders going thru the IF there. Hendricks just seems like he throws guys timing off just enough.

    • Patrick_Schaefer

Beeler had 2 really bad outings giving up 15 runs in 2 games otherwise he has been very solid. If you take away those 2 starts his Era is in the 2’s.

Neil I’d really like to share your articles more on Facebook but when you do it has an add that sticks out more than the article itself. Saying WARNING ADULT CONTENT….. it’s really a detergent for me to post on Facebook I’d like to share what an amazing job you are doing.
Sorry for complaining Just Saying. …

    • Neil

Patrick, no worries and thank you. I cannot figure out where those are coming from. I have someone trying to help me, I can’t find the error in the coding. I am working on it.

      • Patrick_Schaefer

        Thanks a lot Neil.

Hers to hoping AA is in the bigs by September. Even if he hits .250 and OPS of about .700, hed be a huge improvement over Fred Flinstones pal. BTW, as of the the Mendoza line should be re-named for Barney. No one today knows who Mendoza was.

  • BigJonLilJon

Would love to get AA into CF permanently to allow Baez at 2nd, Bryant at 3rd to join Rizzo and Castro in infield. Schwarber into either the catcher or preferably the OF eventually to be added into the mix. Lake can stay in left and be the 7th or 8th hitter in line up. Sounds like the start of something wonderful!!!
